Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Installation Technician
Position Summary
The Shop Technician is responsible for servicing and repairing earthmoving equipment, working both independently and as part of a team. Candidates must be able to evaluate and repair earthmoving equipment and complete required on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and e‑learning. The Technician is expected to demonstrate initiative, teamwork, strong customer service, and efficient problem‑solving. Advancement is based on attitude, skill level, and overall job performance.
EssentialResponsibilities & Expectations
- Adheres to and follows all applicable and required safety standards and procedures.
- Plans and performs minor repairs using correct tools and procedures.
- Performs the following tasks on engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical components: remove and install; disassemble and reassemble; minor adjustments as needed for service.
- Performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrates proper use of service information systems.
- Orders and returns parts for assigned jobs in a timely manner.
- Tests and adjusts components for optimal performance.
- Works independently in the shop as required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license to be eligible for hire.
- Maintain a productive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that upholds the values of the Thompson Tractor brand.
- Demonstrate that you can have a positive relationship with customers, clients, vendors, coworkers, and management.
- Proper and regular attendance required.
Education
High school diploma or the equivalent required.
Experience
- A minimum of one (1) year’s work experience involving mechanical repairs or a combination of relevant experience and equivalent technical education required.
- Experience using personal computers and basic typing skills required.
- Med Card and CDL preferred.
- MVR (required).
Skills and Competencies
- Intermediate engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical diagnostic, and repair skills.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer skills.
Job Training
- Area specific technical training.
- OSHA and MSHA required training.
- Vendor technical software (Infocast, Liftnet, SIMSi, etc.).
Work typically normally performed in a Service Department shop. Exposure to physical risk and all-weather conditions is associated with this position. Standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time often required.
Physical Requirements- Ability to pass pre‑employment background check, physical exam (including drug screen), and meet all physical requirements of the position.
- Ability to speak, listen, write, and type effectively.
- Reaching, grasping, and stooping.
- Kneeling and crawling under equipment.
- Climbing ladders and equipment.
- Lifting and carrying up to 75 lbs.
- Material handling and lifting.
- Exposure to chemicals and construction environments.
- Cranes, hoisting operations, and moving or stationary machinery.
- Noise and eye hazards.
- Risk of slips, trips, and falls.
- Respiratory hazards.
- Potential for lacerations, amputations, strains, and sprains.
- Heat exhaustion or cold stress.
- Electrical hazards.
