This role is responsible for supervising the day-to-day transportation department activities within assigned area(s) including dispatching, routing, product and equipment security, and equipment maintenance. The supervisor assigns work to transportation associates, ensures productivity, maintains a safe work environment, and provides training as necessary.
Responsibilities- Supervise daily transportation operations and coordinate driver schedules and routing via software systems.
- Work with cross-functional departments to resolve transportation or supply-chain issues promptly.
- Ensure customer concerns are addressed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Oversee review of on-board computers and log reports to maximize fleet performance.
- Monitor driver schedules for DOT hours, breaks, idle times, and total hours.
- Collaborate with Fleet Safety/Compliance to maintain FMCSA/CSA and DOT compliance, including re-certifications, driver license renewals, and random drug screening.
- Assist with safety meetings and reinforce compliance.
- Approve driver paperwork, logs, and hours reporting; recommend process changes and provide training.
- Maintain transportation reports, monitor KPI metrics, and analyze results to improve efficiency.
- Ensure health, safety, cleanliness, and security of the work environment.
- Lead pre-shift meetings and communicate training, safety, and HR topics to associates.
- Manage staffing, training, performance, and career development of transportation associates.
- Assist with labor agreement administration as needed.
- High school graduate or GED (required).
- Three years of combined transportation and/or supply-chain operations experience (required).
- One year of supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organization, prioritization, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Leadership and training skills; ability to work with all levels of management and line associates.
- Flexible working hours; availability/on-call during evenings, weekends and emergencies.
- Knowledge of FMCSA/CSA compliance, DOT requirements, dispatching, backhauls, contract carriers, local regulations.
- Experience with transportation onboarding software (Cadec preferred) and routing software (JDA, CAMS).
- Proficient with computers and MS Office (Excel and Word).
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
Must frequently sit, walk, stand, use hands and arms; lift up to 75 pounds with assistance; work in variable temperatures and humidity; handle moderate to high noise levels; work weekends, holidays, day and night hours, overtime, and 8–10 hour shifts as required; travel may vary by assignment.
