Job Summary

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications listed below.

Job Duties

Highway Operations Worker: $18.19 Grade 14

Highway Operations Worker is the entry level position for the Highway Operations Technician series. Responsibilities include operating motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, landscape care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, signing and striping, delivering equipment and materials, ensuring environmental compliance, and vehicle and equipment care.

Highway Operations Tech 1: $20.46 hourly, Grade 17

Highway Operations Tech 1 is the apprentice classification. Responsibilities include all tasks of the Worker plus advanced duties such as more complex pavement work and supervisory tasks.

Highway Operations Tech 2: $22.45 hourly, Grade 18

Highway Operations Tech 2 is the entry journey classification. Responsibilities include performing a broad scope of intermediate level highway operational duties, leading responsibilities, and supervising staff.

Highway Operations Tech 3: $24.44 hourly, Grade 19

Highway Operations Tech 3 is the full journey classification. Responsibilities include performing high level highway operation duties and supervisory responsibilities, scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates' work, inspecting work, training, and guiding staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Highway Operations Worker: Preferred candidate will have 6 months of roadway/highway related experience with motorized vehicles and heavy equipment maintenance, signing and striping, pavement care, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care.
  • Highway Operations Tech 1: Must have 1 year of roadway/highway experience with the same scope of duties.
  • Highway Operations Tech 2: Must have 2 years of roadway/highway experience with the same scope of duties.
  • Highway Operations Tech 3: Must have 3 years of roadway/highway experience with the same scope of duties.
Selective Preference(s)

Highway Operations Worker:
Preference for six months experience in related fields.

Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Highway Operations Worker:
    Obtain Arizona CDL Class A permit within 90 days of hire and Class A CDL within 6 months.
  • Highway Operations Tech 1–3:
    Hold an Arizona Class A CDL (manual or automatic) with N tanker endorsement before the start date and additional endorsements as required.
  • All Positions:
    Register with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse for all CDL holders.
  • All Positions:
    Respond to emergency call-outs 24/7 and be able to reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.
  • All Positions:
    Work in extreme cold and heat, rugged terrain, and high speed traffic conditions.
  • All Positions:
    Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • All Positions:
    May require pesticide control certification for herbicide dispensing.
  • All Positions:
    Maintain a current, valid driver’s license and meet all training and insurance requirements.
