Job SummaryAssist the teacher in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students, small groups, or whole classrooms to help students achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole. Ensure a well‑organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.
General Qualifications- Must have 60 college course hours or have passed a state‑approved test granting Paraprofessional certification.
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in both the native language of bilingual students and English (write and speak fluently).
- Live in or be familiar with the surrounding community.
- Valid Illinois Paraprofessional License is required to apply. Information on how to obtain a license
- Translate between the native language of bilingual students and English in classroom, meeting, or phone call situations.
- Translate documents from the native language to English correctly.
- Administer, score, and record achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills.
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of each student’s needs, interests, and abilities.
- Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Assist with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
- Read to students, listen to student reading, and participate in oral communication activities.
- Assist students in the library or media center.
- Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing, and administer make‑up work as assigned.
- Help students with clothing, lunch, snack, and clean‑up routines.
- Assist with wash‑up and toilet routines.
- Alert the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Serve as the chief source of information for substitute teachers when the regular teacher is absent.
- Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as expected of fully licensed teachers.
- Participate in in‑service training programs as assigned.
- 0 yrs experience – High School Diploma: $18.57/hr
- 0 yrs experience – Associate’s Degree: $19.60/hr
- 0 yrs experience – Bachelor’s Degree: $20.63/hr
- 30 yrs experience – High School Diploma: $28.56/hr
- 30 yrs experience – Associate’s Degree: $29.60/hr
- 30 yrs experience – Bachelor’s Degree: $30.65/hr
- Indoor classrooms – student noise, lawn mowing, music, food odors, mowed grass, possible communicable diseases.
- Outdoor schoolyard and grounds – exposure to varying temperatures and mowed grass.
- Regular work attendance required.
