Paint Process Engineer

Role Overview :

A manufacturing engineer's activities in a factory paint shop are crucial for ensuring high-quality finishes, efficient operations, and continuous improvement.

Key activities include:
  • 1.Process development and optimization

    Developing and implementing painting processes, methodologies, and techniques to maximize efficiency, quality, and consistency.

    Identifying and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to reduce defects and increase productivity.

    Analyzing existing processes and layouts to identify areas for optimization and cost reduction.

    Ensuring products meet the highest standards for finish quality, including color consistency, smoothness, durability, and resistance to wear.

  • 2. Equipment and tooling management

    Overseeing the maintenance and calibration of painting equipment, ensuring proper functionality and minimizing downtime.

    Assisting in the design and fabrication of fixtures and tooling to support efficient and accurate paint application.

    Evaluating and recommending new equipment or technologies to improve processes and product quality.

    Developing and supporting the specification and installation of capital equipment for the paint shop.

  • 3. Quality assurance and control

    Developing and implementing paint process quality control plans for various stages, including pre-treatment, electrocoat, sealer, topcoat, and sanding/polishing.

    Inspecting finished products for defects and addressing any issues in the painting process.

    Collaborating with the quality assurance team to investigate and resolve painting-related quality issues.

    Reviewing engineering drawings and creating supporting documentation to ensure products meet paint specifications and quality standards.

  • 4. Troubleshooting and problem solving

    Quickly identifying and addressing any issues in the painting process, such as adhesion problems, uneven application, or drying/curing issues.

    Troubleshooting and programming automated paint systems.

    Implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence of defects.

  • 5. Collaboration and training

    Partnering with production engineers and leaders to ensure a successful ramp and long‑term production.

    Collaborating with the design engineering teams to ensure manufacturability without compromising product function or performance.

    Providing training to production staff on proper painting techniques, equipment usage, and safety procedures.

    Working with customers to understand manufacturing processes and requirements.

  • 6. Safety and compliance

    Maintaining a safe and ergonomic work environment in the paint shop.

    Ensuring all painting processes adhere to environmental regulations and safety standards.

    Following Lean Manufacturing, Total Quality Management, and Six Sigma principles to improve processes and products.
