To provide high-quality ultrasound images of the heart and great vessels for adult patients. Provide technical assistance with exercise and non-exercise stress testing. Handle other duties as required or assigned. Perform high-quality two-dimensional ultrasound studies of the heart and great vessels. Identify EKG abnormalities and/or arrhythmias. Utilize knowledge of age-specific needs of patients in the performance of everyday duties. Understand complementary imaging and/or Doppler techniques, including when to use methods to investigate specific clinical questions.
Demonstrate the use of M-Mode technique for measuring cardiac dimensions at precise times of the cardiac cycle. Estimate the severity of valvular insufficiencies by mapping dimensions, orientation, and directions of the regurgitant jet using color flow Doppler. Assess blood flow through the heart, including increased velocities, stenosis, regurgitation, and shunts using pulsed and continuous-wave Doppler. Use contrast echocardiography when two-dimensional and color flow are suboptimal.
Evaluate left and right ventricular systolic and diastolic functions and document wall motion abnormalities. Recognize congenital heart malformations and acquired pathologies. Correlate clinical history with exams to be performed. Consult with the cardiologist for clarification. Monitor, record, charge, and communicate appropriately using a computerized documentation system. Prepare, instruct, assist patients, and produce images in a timely manner for dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiograms.
Assist the cardiologist in performing transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE). Communicate results to the cardiologist and respond to questions and concerns promptly. Maintain monthly correlation studies and statistics. Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and report equipment failure. Participate in mobile echo/vascular service regionally. Participate in callback rotation. Assist in performing functional, pharmacological cardiolite, and echocardiography stress testing. Document procedures correctly. Accurately assess patients and their physical ability to perform tests.
Interpret and clarify physicians' orders. Provide thorough assessments of patients in a crisis and notify the physician when necessary. Display proficiency in recognizing lethal arrhythmias. Complete quarterly competency in stress lab, Holter monitoring, and event monitoring. Use segmental approach while obtaining images of cardiac structures in four echo cardiographic windows. Operate specific ultrasound equipment to produce interpretable images. Select the transducer best suited to the structures of interest for optimal resolution.
Obtain, review, and document pertinent patient history and clinical data for diagnostic purposes. Demonstrate proficiency in conducting pediatric echocardiograms.
