Planet Technology has partnered with a Chicago area company to locate a Embedded System Support Engineer for a contract-to-hire position. The role will support and maintain custom software applications running in AWS and Windows environments. This role focuses on deploying, configuring, and troubleshooting application systems and embedded devices rather than traditional corporate IT tools (no Active Directory or Office 365 support).
This is a customer-facing position, so strong communication skills and a passion for problem-solving are essential.
The position will require five days a week onsite to start but will eventually be hybrid with three days onsite and two days remote. As it is a contract-to-hire role, candidates must be able to work directly on a w2 with no sponsorship.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support for custom applications running in AWS and Windows environments
- Deploy, configure, and maintain software systems and embedded devices
- Run SQL queries to generate reports and troubleshoot data-related issues
- Troubleshoot system, application, and device-level issues across customer environments
- Support platforms running on Linux, Windows, and RTOS-based systems
- Work directly with customers to resolve technical issues and explain solutions clearly
- Document system configurations, issues, and resolutions
- Learn and support specialized POS and embedded technologies
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience providing technical support for applications or systems (not just desktop IT support)
- Hands-on experience with AWS and Windows environments
- Basic to intermediate SQL skills (queries, reporting, data troubleshooting)
- Interest in working with embedded devices or POS systems
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable working with customers and communicating technical concepts clearly
- Willingness to learn proprietary applications and platforms
Preferred Skills
- Experience with POS systems or payment terminals
- Exposure to Linux or RTOS environments
- Hardware or field system support experience
- Background in supporting custom or enterprise applications
