Scion Executive Search has been engaged to conduct an immediate search for an Executive Director for our client, a nonprofit organization that support adults with disabilities across Central Illinois through programs and services that enhance daily living, foster inclusion, and empower greater independence.

This role offers the chance to lead a highly visible, community-anchored organization and build on a strong legacy of service and advocacy. This full-time, hybrid role is based in Peoria, Illinois.

Position Overview:

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive and strategic leader, responsible for advancing the organization’s mission, ensuring operational excellence, and maintaining financial sustainability. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the ED oversees all programs, services, and administrative functions, including subsidiary entities.

This leader will partner closely with the Board to set organizational vision and strategy, while fostering a culture centered on dignity, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement. The Executive Director will also serve as the primary ambassador for the organization, strengthening community partnerships and advocating for individuals with disabilities at the local, state, and national levels.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizational Leadership & Strategy
  • Partner with the Board of Directors to develop and execute a clear, forward-looking strategic plan that supports organizational growth, program innovation, and long-term sustainability.
  • Translate strategic priorities into actionable operational plans with measurable outcomes.
  • Foster a high-performance, mission-aligned culture that emphasizes collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
Board Relations & Governance
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board, ensuring transparent and timely communication on organizational performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Support Board development, engagement, and effective governance practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and nonprofit governance standards.
  • Oversee financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to ensure fiscal health and sustainability.
  • Partner with the Controller and Board to maintain strong financial controls and accountability.
  • Lead efforts to diversify and expand revenue streams, including grants, contracts, partnerships, and philanthropic support.
  • Identify and pursue strategic growth opportunities aligned with mission and market needs.
Operations & Program Oversight
  • Provide executive oversight of all programs and services, ensuring quality, effectiveness, and alignment with mission.
  • Champion continuous quality improvement initiatives across all service areas.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and funding requirements.
  • Oversee subsidiary operations to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
People Leadership & Organizational Development
  • Directly supervise senior leadership team, including the Controller, Chief Operating Officer, and program administrators.
  • Build, mentor, and retain a high-performing leadership team.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive workplace culture that supports staff development and engagement.
  • Ensure all staff complete required trainings and maintain compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
  • Serve as the primary external representative and spokesperson.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, funders, government agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Advocate for policies and initiatives that support individuals with disabilities.
  • Elevate the organization’s visibility and reputation within the community and beyond.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of senior leadership and supervisory experience, preferably within a nonprofit or human services environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational leadership, including strategic planning and execution.
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including budgeting and operational oversight.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities or within disability services a plus.
  • Track record of successful fundraising, revenue diversification, or business development.
  • Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

In addition to offering a competitive salary in the range of $130,000 to $175,000 (commensurate with experience), this opportunity provides a strong and comprehensive benefit package.
