Job Summary
Working from blueprints and specifications, fabricates metal parts using lathes, planers, shapers, milling machines, drill presses, measuring instruments and hand tools. May dismantle and assemble equipment, install cutting tools, set machine speed and feed, inspect parts for defects, and reassemble after new fabrication.
Location & ShiftProvident Hospital – 7:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M.
Typical Duties- Study blueprints and specifications of damaged metal parts.
- Plan work sequence and order materials from the stockroom.
- Lay out work, establishing reference points, center lines, and guides.
- Measure with scale, calipers, and micrometers; mark metal with scriber, center punch, surface gauge, and dividers.
- Clamp work in chuck, vise, or other device; install cutting tool; set speed and feed; operate machine tools to cut metal to required size and shape.
- Dismantle machinery for repairs, inspect parts for wear or cracks, and reassemble after fabrication.
- Weld and brazing broken parts with electric or gas equipment; cut steel plate with acetylene torch; build up work metal with metalizing machine.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of accredited Journeyman Machinist training or apprenticeship plus either one year full‑time paid experience as a Journeyman Machinist or five years full‑time paid experience as a Machinist.
- Knowledge of properties of steel, brass, bronze, and other metals.
- Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and procedures relevant to the machinist trade.
- Ability to set up and perform all operations on standard machine tools, working to a tolerance of .0001 inch.
- Ability to read blueprints, plan work sequence, select proper tools and metals, and lay out work.
- Physical ability to lift, pull, push, and move moderate to heavy items; moderate to extensive travel within Cook County.
Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who served at least six months of continuous service. Eligible Veterans must meet minimum qualifications, identify as a Veteran on the application, and provide DD‑214, DD‑215, NGB‑22, or a valid state /driver’s license indicating veteran status.
