Nurses will be responsible for interpreting EKGs and titrating medications, primarily Cardizem and heparin. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day shift and 1:5-6 during the night shift.
There is a charge nurse present on each shift who does not take patient assignments. Patient care technicians assist on this unit with different ratios depending on the shift. Registered nurses are required to read and interpret telemetry strips as well as troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment. Weekend and holiday shifts are mandatory, with a rotation system in place. Nurses will float to other general medical units as needed.
Dress code allows for any color scrubs that are not children's or cartoon prints. Unit-specific orientation typically occurs during the first shift.
