Description:
The ICU is currently a COVID unit. Previous primary diagnoses included Sepsis, ARDS, Pneumonia, AKI, ETOH withdrawal, and Overdose. Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1 RN to 2 patients. Charge nurses are available and free as staffing allows. A house supervisor is present 24/7. Patient care techs are available at a ratio of 1 to 10 patients. Intensivists are in-house from approximately 0700 to 1900.
Telemedicine support is available along with an attending physician on call. Registered Nurses are responsible for troubleshooting respiratory therapy equipment. Telemetry is monitored by a tech, but nurses must read and interpret their own EKG strips. Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM. Weekend requirements include working every other weekend. Holidays are based on staffing needs.
No call or standby requirements are in place. Travelers may float first, taking on a different patient load as necessary. Scrubs are not provided, and specific scrub colors are not required, but sweatshirts are not allowed. Orientation includes training on electronic health records and unit-specific education.
