Description:
The Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit has 54 beds consisting of two semi-private rooms. Patient ratios on day shifts are 1 nurse to 4-5 patients and on night shifts are 1 nurse to 5-6 patients. Common diagnoses and types of patients include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience conditions, along with some medical overflow. RNs on this unit will be required to titrate drips.
Nurse aids or patient care technicians are present with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day, 1:9-10 during the evening, and 1:10-12 istered nurses troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment, including high-flow systems for stable patients. There are telemetry monitors available, and RNs are not required to interpret strips. Shifts for nurses are set at 12 hours, with requests considered for scheduling. There is a weekend requirement of every other weekend.
Holidays are also required every other holiday. Floating may occur in rotation with the rest of the staff, with a focus on competency in specific skills. Tattoos must be covered while on duty, and piercings are limited to ears. Orientation consists of two days with an educator and one day caring for patients with a preceptor.
