Description

American Traveler is hiring a Neuro Med-Surg RN for a night shift acute care position requiring prior neuro unit and Level 1 trauma experience.

Details
  • Acute care Neuro Med-Surg unit with 54 beds (2 semi-private)
  • Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience cases with some medical overflow
  • Nurse to patient ratios of 1:4-5 days and 1:5-6 nights
  • Nurse aide/PCT support present with ratios of 1:9-10 days and evenings and 1:10-12 nights
  • 24/7 charge nurse and house supervisor coverage on the unit
  • House-wide telemetry monitoring using Phillips monitors, so RNs are not required to read their own strips
  • RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
  • High flow oxygen used occasionally for stable COVID patients
  • 12-hour night shifts
  • Every other weekend and every other holiday required
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Floating required within general unit rotation, with limited scope if floated to other units in urgent situations
  • EPIC EMR used
Requirements
  • Active IL RN license required or license verification in process
  • BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior dedicated neuro unit experience required
  • Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
  • Heparin drip titration experience required
  • Must be able to pass a negative drug screen for all panels
Additional Information
  • Provide direct care to neuroscience patients including stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, and head injury cases
  • Titrate medication drips such as heparin based on lab values
  • Collaborate with charge nurses and house supervisors who are available around the clock
  • Float within the general unit rotation as needed, with limited responsibilities if floated to unfamiliar units
  • No scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered and only ear piercings are permitted while on duty
  • Unit orientation includes 2 days with an educator and 1 day with a preceptor for patient care
  • COVID vaccination is not required for this facility
  • Local candidates accepted; no radius rule, though clinicians within 50 miles are considered local rate
