American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Stepdown Care Unit position requiring ICU or Intermediate-level nursing experience with trach and vent care.
Details- Work in the Stepdown Care Unit of an acute care hospital
- 21-bed unit with 9 private rooms and the remainder semi-private
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 3 to 1
- Combined unit caring for medical, neuro, neuro surgical, general/trauma surgical, and trauma patients
- Common diagnoses include COPD, CHF, DM, sepsis, end stage renal disease, liver failure, pancreatitis, GI bleeds, DKA, alcohol withdrawal/overdose, complex pneumonia, stroke, seizures, post-op craniotomy, lumbar drains, radical neck dissections, and total laryngectomies
- Frequent care of trach and vent patients, including Bipap, Cpap, and face mask ventilator use
- Manages chest tubes, G tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, central lines, and arterial lines
- RNs titrate drips including Cardene, Cardizem, Amio, Dobutamine, Heparin, and low-dose vasopressors
- All patients on Phillips bedside monitors with tele techs interpreting strips and RNs confirming
- 12-hour night shifts from
- Every other weekend required, with night shift working Fri/Sat
- Every other holiday rotation required, plus companion day of major holidays
- No call or standby requirement
- Travel RNs float first, potentially to ICU (with sufficient ICU experience), other Stepdown units, or Gen Med
- Uses EPIC EMR
- Active IL RN license required
- BLS (AHA) certification required; ACLS recommended
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
- ICU or Intermediate/Stepdown experience with a 3:1 or 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio required
- Progressive care or telemetry-only experience is not sufficient
- Trach and vent management experience required
- Comfortable titrating cardiac and vasopressor drips
- EPIC EMR experience preferred
- Provide direct bedside care for a mix of medical, neuro, and surgical patients requiring close monitoring
- Charge nurse is typically free from patient assignments unless staffing requires otherwise
- House supervisor coverage is available 24/7
- Unit staffed with 2 PCTs per shift, each taking up to 10 patients when unit is full
- Unit orientation includes 1 day for EPIC training, 1 day with the unit educator, and 1 day on the floor with an RN
- Scrubs of any color are accepted
- Facility is a Drug-Free Campus requiring a negative drug screen for all panels
- COVID vaccination is not required
- Local candidates accepted with no radius restriction on eligibility
