The Dynamics and Structure Group (DYS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to develop High‑Pressure, High‑Temperature X‑ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (HPHT‑XPCS) for probing non‑Newtonian viscoelasticity under extreme conditions.
Responsibilities- Integration of high‑temperature diamond‑anvil‑cell (DAC) environments with Small‑angle X‑ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy.
- Development of novel inline optics at the beamline that enables simultaneous x‑ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy for high‑pressure calibration, as well as on‑axis microscopy.
- Lead multidisciplinary work with chemists, geophysicists, and x‑ray scientists and apply the new HPHT‑XPCS technique to address knowledge gaps in high‑pressure science and publish results in scientific journals.
The initial appointment is for two years and may be extended to a third year, contingent on performance, project progress, and funding. This is an on‑site role at Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, IL), within the X‑ray Science Division (XSD) and the APS scientific user‑facility.
Qualifications- Ph.D. completed in the past five years or soon‑to‑be completed in Geoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Materials/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: high‑pressure science, synchrotron X‑ray techniques, rheology, Raman spectroscopy, and Python programming, among others.
- Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
- Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.
