Job Description

WSP is currently searching for a Senior Geologist/Senior Environmental Scientist for our Peoria or Springfield, IL office. The role involves planning, permitting, execution, and delivery of environmental investigation and remediation projects across the Midwest, including Phase I and Phase II projects, RCRA permitting/Corrective Action, and CERCLA projects. The ideal candidate has strong investigation expertise, remedial alternative selection and implementation skills, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments while ensuring project performance, budget, schedule, and regulatory compliance.

Impact
  • Assisting with collecting, extracting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from soil sampling, soil gas sampling, groundwater sampling, stormwater sampling, boring logs, and other matrices for projects, investigations, and surveys.
  • Actively engaging in business development and proposal writing.
  • Ensuring regulatory requirement compliance regarding data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and record retention.
  • Performing professional environmental science work and conducting investigations, inspections, and environmental studies to verify site characteristics and plan for future needs.
  • Conducting environmental site assessments (Phase I and II).
  • Preparing data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, models, cross-sections, and other illustrations for complex data interpretation.
  • Preparing comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, findings, and recommendations for addressing, preventing, controlling, or restoring environmental problems.
  • Overseeing and monitoring cross‑functional teams in executing project work, permitting strategy, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory compliance, including project budgets, tracking hours and expenses, and task completion.
  • Providing high‑level oversight for desk‑based research, fieldwork, and/or laboratory work, including measurements, data interpretation, and computer modeling.
  • Assisting with development and scoping of medium‑to‑large sized projects.
  • Assisting technical staff and project managers with environmental risk identification and assessment and offering input on remediation projects.
  • Collaborating with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future‑ready solutions for clients.
  • Coordinating with clients, regulatory agencies, and environmental and technical staff in a confident and professional manner.
  • Exercising responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • BS or BA in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, or Environmental Science.
  • 7 to 10 years of experience as an environmental professional completing surveys, fieldwork, habitat and impact assessments, and/or construction monitoring.
  • Appropriate professional licensure/certification.
  • Established experience coordinating with clients, regulatory permitting agencies, and environmental technical staff.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and reviewing environmental science technical reports, environmental impact evaluations, siting reports, and permit applications.
  • Highly capable self‑leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact persuasively with employees at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze testing results and data.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project specifics.
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR ).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
