Position: OPERATING ENGINEER I

Shift Time

10pm-6am

Job Summary

Assists in the operations, monitoring, and maintenance of building and power plant mechanical and operating systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water pumping, refrigeration, life safety, security, building automation, and energy conservation. Supports heating, lighting, and electrical power for hospitals, residential institutions, and other county facilities. Supervises mechanical assistants, firemen, fireman helpers, boiler washers, and other staff as directed.

Typical Duties
  • Assists in operations, maintenance, and regulation of mechanical and operating systems for the building and power plant.
  • Repairs equipment to completion to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Directs mechanical assistants, firemen, fireman helpers, and boiler washers in the performance of preventative maintenance duties.
  • Monitors and reads operation performance of equipment using meters, gauges, charts, and computers to verify proper function and records readings.
  • Obtains approval for adjustments to equipment to meet facility demands while ensuring safety and efficiency.
  • Assists in maintaining the energy conservation program by regulating electrical, pneumatic, and automation control devices.
  • Assists in life safety and emergency situations per facility policy, responding to 24‑hour emergency calls.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Operating Engineer III and the Operating Engineer II.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program to attain journeyman status as an operating engineer.
  • Current and valid Stationary Engineer’s License issued by the City of Chicago.
  • Valid Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) card.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of commercial and industrial electrical, plumbing, and steam‑fitting systems.
  • Skill in locating and identifying equipment maintenance problems, making emergency repairs, and taking corrective action.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and blueprints.
  • Ability to supervise mechanical assistants, firemen, fireman helpers, boiler washers, and other staff.
  • Physical demands include lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving moderate to heavy weight objects.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Position requires adherence to all hospital safety requirements, including PPE, hand washing, sanitizing practices, and department safety controls in a healthcare environment.
