Job Summary
The Warehouse Material Handler plays a vital role in maintaining the flow of donated goods throughout the warehouse. This position ensures donations are efficiently sorted, processed, and prepared for distribution or recycling. The role is highly physical and requires operating warehouse equipment safely and effectively while working in a fast‑paced, production‑driven environment.
Example Duties and Activities- Unload and load trailers with donated goods using forklifts, pallet jacks, and other equipment in accordance with OSHA safety standards.
- Expedite the movement of goods between processing, storage, and dock areas.
- Provide excellent customer service to donors, offering assistance and education about Goodwill’s mission and programs.
- Ensure all donations are handled carefully and respectfully.
- Sort and process donations, ensuring items are appropriately categorized for retail, recycling, or disposal.
- Operate a baler to compact recyclable goods, preparing them for shipment.
- Organize and stack recycled materials and dispose of metals for recycling.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized warehouse environment by sweeping floors, labeling boxes, and keeping work areas clear.
- Monitor and perform preventative checks on warehouse equipment.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or potential hazards to leadership.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall warehouse operations.
- Knowledge of Warehouse Processes – familiarity with receiving, putaway, storage, picking, packing, and shipping to ensure continuous efficient warehousing operations.
- Experience with pallet jack, double stacker, baler, and/or tipper.
- Communication Skills – articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non‑verbal communication skills, and listens to comprehend customers’ needs.
- Customer Focus – ability to see, comprehend, and relate with customers in an impartial, unbiased, yet effective manner; builds and maintains customer satisfaction.
- Mathematical Aptitude – adds and subtracts two‑digit numbers and multiplies and divides with 10s and 100s, using units of American money and weight, volume, and distance.
- Reasoning Ability – applies common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form and handles problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Teamwork – works well with others and makes valued contributions to group outputs.
- Ethical – adheres to procedures and protocol, including maintaining confidentiality in passwords, logging on and off procedures, and adherence to Goodwill’s values.
