Job DescriptionThe role of the Building-Based Substitute Teacher is to maintain classroom procedures as if the regular teacher were present. The substitute will assume the same responsibilities and duties as the regular teacher. Additional duties may include bus duty, playground supervision, lunch coverage, hallway/bathroom coverage, or other responsibilities when teaching coverage is not needed. The substitute will provide students with appropriate learning activities that help them reach their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth while following any lesson plans and/or instructions left by the classroom teacher.
The goal is to ensure continuity of instruction and a safe learning environment.
- Rotate into various teaching positions daily and throughout the day as needed.
- Implement teacher lesson plans and administrator directives with fidelity and efficiency.
- Communicate expectations for student work, behavior, and lesson execution to classroom teachers and, if necessary, the principal.
- Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.
- Prevent interruption of classroom instruction during the teacher’s absence.
- Gain familiarity with district curriculum and resources.
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities when requested.
- Perform supervisory duties as assigned (e.g., lunch, bus, recess).
- Abide by state statutes, school committee policies, and district regulations.
- Attend meetings and perform duties assigned by the principal or designee.
- Take reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
- Report suspicions of abuse and/or neglect to the principal.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff personnel information.
- Act as a positive role model for students and support the mission of the Department.
- Remain flexible with job assignments as needed.
- Stay current on instructional practices in education (e.g., instructional technology).
- Assume responsibility for other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
- Position Type: Full‑time
- Salary: $27,000 per year
- Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree required; prior teaching experience preferred, especially in an MA public school setting. Any combination of education and work experience may also be considered.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Preference for applicants holding a valid Massachusetts Teaching License or the ability to obtain an Emergency License for the school year through MA DESE.
- Skills and Ability: Relate well to teachers, students, staff, and parents; possess professional competence and personal integrity; work independently while accepting and implementing directions; collaborate with a multidisciplinary team; experience with Google products and implementation of remote lessons; maintain emotional control under stress.
- Work Environment: The school environment may be high energy and moderately noisy. Recess may involve time outdoors in inclement weather. Frequent standing, walking, kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting are required. Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds.
