Job Description

Position Title: Substitute Teacher

Position Type: Temporary, Classroom

Location: Assigned School (To be Determined)

Reports To: Principal

Employment Relationship: Substitute teachers are employed at-will. Temporary employees are hired for a pre-established period and typically during teacher absence. They are ineligible for benefits and holiday pay.

Summary & Relationship to Curriculum: All positions strengthen delivery of instruction supporting the district mission. The role performs duties of a classroom teacher or paraprofessional in their absence or to teach a class without a regular teacher.

  • Teaches at an appropriate instructional level.
  • Follows lesson plans and schedules of the teacher/paraprofessional.
  • Supports, monitors, and encourages appropriate student conduct.
  • Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators.
  • Provides feedback to the teacher regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Handles non-instructional tasks efficiently and uses instructional time appropriately.
  • Maintains an effective physical setting for instruction.
  • Follows professional practices consistent with school district and state policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues.
  • Interacts professionally and works cooperatively with staff, students, parents, and district personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality of students and student records.
  • Complies with all rules, procedures and policies.
  • Enforces policies concerning student conduct and discipline.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files reports promptly.
  • Acts in a professional manner and assumes responsibility for the total school program, its safety and good order.
  • Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assumes responsibility for supervising students at all times.
  • Performs any other duties as requested by district employees.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Certificates/Licenses: Valid substitute teaching certificate, passing score on the paraprofessional exam, or professional teaching certificate.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; to handle problems with few variables in standardized situations; to apply sound educational principles to various classroom situations.
  • Technical Ability: Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Professional Requirements

Must serve as a role model to students. Desirable personal characteristics are required. Appropriate dress and grooming consistent with established standards. Must be on time, meet attendance standards, and conduct activities safely.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to walk, stand, and lift. Occasionally must crouch or kneel. Must be able to exert or lift up to approximately 30 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. Emergency lifting or assisting students may be necessary.

Work Environment

Noise level typically moderate.
