Job Description Summary

As a Refrigeration Operator you will be responsible for operating and maintaining the ammonia refrigeration system and all associated ancillary equipment. You will work with managers and other operators and technicians to provide refrigeration utilities to the plant.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain refrigeration equipment: compressors, evaporative condensers, evaporators, vessels, pumps, valves, PSV/PRV, heat exchangers, auto purgers, ventilation fans, instrumentation, and controls.
  • Perform periodic maintenance using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) in accordance with PSM, IIAR, ASHRAE, RAGAGEP, company SOPs, and/or OEM manuals.
  • Use, maintain, inspect, and organize tools required for maintenance procedures.
  • Complete and retain records such as PSM, maintenance, incidents, odor logs, emergency response, OEM manual recommendations, and others.
  • Perform daily rounds/checks of the ammonia refrigeration system.
  • Utilize P&IDs, schematics, loop sheets, I/O diagrams, and other drawings in the execution of duties.
  • Conduct basic benchtop chemistry related to the refrigeration system, including evaporative condenser water, glycol, chilled water, and anhydrous ammonia COA.
  • Monitor controls, interfaces, and historical data to ensure optimal system performance and intervene to restore system from upset conditions.
  • Charge/discharge refrigeration system with anhydrous ammonia following written procedures.
  • Perform line break procedures when taking equipment components out of service for inspection and/or maintenance.
  • Be a required member of the emergency response team; PSM team; ER team.
  • Respond to emergencies involving chemical spills.
  • Participate in audits and inspections; implement corrective actions from recommendations.
  • Train other team members in routine work on refrigeration systems and ancillary equipment.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    2+ years experience in industrial ammonia refrigeration.
  • Preferred skills and qualifications:
    • Formal ammonia refrigeration training; RETA CARO/CIRO Certification preferred.
    • HAZMAT/HAZWOPER 40-hour training and related experience.
    • Chemical safety awareness of anhydrous ammonia (R717); ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
    • Experience with full-face respirator;
      Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA); related PPE in emergency response.
    • Knowledge of ammonia refrigeration system equipment and principles.
    • Mechanical skills to maintain, operate, and repair ammonia refrigeration equipment and components.
    • Familiarity with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
    • Ability to work in hot/cold environments, traverse catwalks/stairs, lift heavy loads, work at heights, and withstand extreme conditions.
Additional Information

Pay range: 30.30 - 41.67 per hour. Actual wage varies based on factors including external market data, internal equity, location, and candidate skill set and experience.
