General Summary

The Assistant Principal cooperatively works with the principal in the maintenance of appropriate instructional and extracurricular programs for the benefit of students. They assist the principal by carrying out designated duties in directing the daily activities of the staff and students and act in the capacity of the principal during his/her absence from duty. The Assistant Principal will become familiar with all phases of the school program.

Job Duties (Time Weighting)
  • Policy and Administrative Directive Oversight (20%)
    • Implement Board of Education policies and administrative directives and recommend changes to achieve board and district goals.
    • Liaise with appropriate outside agencies.
    • Coordinate state, national, and local testing for students (e.g., Advanced Placement, Ohio State Tests, PSAT, SAT).
  • Staff Supervision (40%)
    • Work cooperatively with all members of the management team.
    • Assume duties of chief administrative officer in the principal’s absence.
    • Observe, coordinate, and evaluate staff as assigned by the principal.
    • Supervise secretaries, hall, cafeteria, and study hall monitors.
    • Follow district protocol for interviews and communicate impressions of prospective staff members.
    • Assume responsibility at co‑curricular events as directed.
    • Lead building/district‑led initiatives for staff and students (e.g., Jacket Way/PBIS, HQSD, Crisis Team, Facilities, Purple Star, MTSS).
  • Student Attendance and Discipline (30%)
    • Administer all attendance, tardiness, and disciplinary procedures, policies, and programs.
    • Maintain accurate student records.
    • Create partnerships with parents/guardians, families, outside agencies, and district departments to implement restorative practices for student success.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise staff and cooperate with the management team as needed. Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education or a related field.
  • Valid driver’s license and background clearance.
  • State of Ohio Principal's Certificate/License.
  • Professional tact, diplomacy, and presentation with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents, and the community.
  • Conscientious and assumes responsibility for own work performance.
  • Successful completion of the OTES 2.0 teacher evaluation system and the OCES counselor evaluation system.
Knowledge
  • English Language: knowledge of the structure and content of English, including spelling, composition, and grammar.
  • Administration: knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and workplace terminology.
  • Customer and Personal Service: knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • Administration and Management: knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
