Position: Patrol Officer (Entry Level)

---ATTENTION--- The City of Perrysburg Civil Service Commission will be establishing a list of candidates for the position of Patrol Officer (Entry Level) for the City of Perrysburg Police Division. The written test and PHQ will be administered through National Testing Network (NTN) at  Please visit NTN's website for additional information and to register for testing dates. Candidates that are not OPOTA certified, or Ohio State Highway Patrol Basic Training certified, must attend and successfully complete an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy selected by the Chief of Police.

Applicants must also successfully complete a physical ability test (dates and times to be announced once determined). Please refer to the Supplemental Information section for more details and information on the testing procedure.

Honorably discharged military veterans who submit a legible copy of their DD214 will be given an additional 5% of their passing score. DD214 documents may be uploaded with this application or emailed to Human Resources. Documents must be received or postmarked no later than the closing date.

Summary of Duties

Under the direct supervision of a Sergeant, a Police Officer patrols a designated area ensuring compliance with all applicable State Laws and City Ordinances; answers calls when a crime is suspected or an emergency exists; takes such actions as are necessary to prevent crime, to apprehend criminals, to maintain safety, to assist citizens in a wide range of emergency and non-emergency situations;

and performs other related duties, tasks, and assignments as required and directed by a Sergeant, the Lieutenant, the Deputy Chief, or the Chief of Police. Additional guidance is provided by the Division's Policies and Procedures, Rules and Regulations, written directives and memos, City Administrative Policies, and applicable Federal, State and Local Laws. Officers are required to take a problem-solving approach to the situations they encounter on a day-to-day basis and to interact with the public on a regular basis to address any relevant concerns.

Police Officers are subject to working varied hours, holidays, and overtime as required during assigned shifts and will be subject to emergency call-ins for critical incidents or other situations requiring emergency or additional police staffing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
  • Drives a police vehicle, patrolling an assigned area.
  • Reports unsafe conditions, such as obstructions in streets.
  • Issues citations for violations of traffic laws.
  • Makes arrests for criminal law violations, sometimes requiring the use of physical effort.
  • Transports prisoners.
  • Investigates traffic accidents, determining conditions, causes and other pertinent facts regarding accident.
  • Conducts investigations of crimes, preserves crime scenes, gathers and preserves evidence.
  • Checks doors and windows of homes and businesses for security.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Answers inquiries; assists stranded motorists.
  • Looks for and investigates conditions or situations which may indicate a crime is about to be, or has been, committed.
  • Creates and maintains records and prepares reports of incidents and activities.
  • Takes statements from victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Secures arrests and search warrants as required.
  • Where juveniles are involved, conducts interviews, recommends charges where applicable, appears in court, and works with school authorities.
  • Directs and regulates traffic.

Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate authority.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent certificate.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Upon successful completion of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy, maintain OPOTC Peace Officer Certificate as a condition of continued employment with the Police Division.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain certification (pursuant to state standards) for the operation of on-duty and off-duty firearms (i.e. Police Shotgun, Patrol Rifle, and assigned duty handgun).
  • Minimum of 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License and be eligible for coverage under the City's vehicle insurance provider
  • Must be eligible to legally work in the United States.
  • Background must be free of prior felony convictions.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is regarded as an essential requirement of this classification.
  • Adherence to all applicable Federal and State safety laws, rules, and regulations and City safety policies/procedures.
