Purpose and Scope

Dialysis experience required. The Inpatient RN provides direct patient care in accordance with company policies and procedures, including FMCNA compliance programs and contracted hospitals’ policies. Areas of practice include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapies, apheresis, and ultrafiltration. The Inpatient RN partners with the hospital to deliver quality care and a positive patient experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform direct patient care in multiple modalities such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis.
  • Supervise and direct Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; provide education to ICU staff for CRRT.
  • Assess patients’ responses to treatment and adjust protocols as indicated by qualified physicians.
  • Communicate problems or concerns to the Program Manager, physicians, patient’s primary nurse, and other relevant staff.
  • Deliver safe and effective care in a timely and efficient manner and provide organized shift reports.
  • Apply critical thinking to schedule patient care and prioritize based on labs, orders, and assessment.
  • Administer, monitor, and document intradialytic transfusions and report adverse reactions to physicians and blood suppliers.
  • Collaborate with physicians and team members to coordinate daily care plans for continuity of care.
  • Document all treatment information in patient records (ACES) and hospital records.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Conduct pre‑treatment machine setup, alarm testing, and, if applicable, initiate Solution Delivery System.
  • Operate related equipment safely and troubleshoot minor issues while minimizing waste.
  • Perform safety tests, calibrations, dialysate testing, and disinfection on machines per policies and document accordingly.
  • Participate in QAI activities, staff meetings, training, orientation, and act as a subject‑matter expert for complications.
  • Report incidents, complaints, or problems per adverse event reporting requirements.
  • Assist with additional duties such as in‑center patient care, project participation, and other tasks as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Employees receive a color blindness test as a condition of employment, but failure does not preclude employment; accommodations may be made. The position requires direct patient care, interaction with patients, outpatient clinicians, hospital staff, and physicians. Travel between hospitals and facilities, regional meetings, and educational events is required. On‑call rotation includes night, day, weekend, and holidays. Exposure to infectious materials, heavy lifting (over 200 lbs with assistance) and chemical/water solutions (up to 30 lbs up to 5 feet) may occur.

Supervision

Provides supervision and direction of Patient Care Technicians and clerical staff; educates ICU staff for CRRT.

Education

Current state licensure. Maintains current knowledge in nephrology, especially inpatient care modalities. Must meet practice requirements in the employed state and certification in Nephrology Nursing, Apheresis Nursing, or both is highly encouraged.

Experience and Required Skills
  • One year RN experience required.
  • Minimum six months of nephrology experience before independent work in dialysis or apheresis services.
  • Strong assessment skills for critically ill patients; ICU experience preferred but not required.
  • Completion of a training course in theory and practice of ESRD patient care (Progressive Renal Education Preparation).
  • BLS CPR recognition required; ACLS CPR recognition preferred.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time‑management skills and commitment to ongoing education.
  • Leadership skills with ability to supervise PCTs, CCHTs, and clerical staff.
  • Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training required.
Compensation

Hourly rate: $37.00 - $63.00, depending on location and qualifications.
