Bilingual Paraprofessional
Position Title:
Bilingual Paraprofessional
Reports To:

Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Paraprofessional endorsement on educator license issued by the Illinois State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board
- Ability to communicate effectively in the selected native language, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
- Evidence of physical fitness and freedom from communicable disease
- Successful completion of a criminal background check
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Skilled in the use of office computer equipment, related software applications, and other standard office machines
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents both verbally and in writing
- Assist the teacher with classroom instructional tasks as assigned, including reading and listening to students, and reviewing their work
- Work with students individually and in small groups to assist with the learning of content and skills introduced by the teacher
- Assist the teacher in communicating with parents
- Translate orally between the native language and English for students, parents, and school staff
- Translate written materials between the native language and English, including correspondence, forms, applications, notices, instructional materials, and other written materials of the school
- Assist teachers in the planning, organizing and implementing of instruction for students in the Bilingual and English as a Second Language Programs
- Serve as a tutor for students when requested by the teacher
- Serve as a liaison between parents, students, and the school, explaining school policies, procedures, services, programs, and the goals of the instructional program
- Visit homes when requested to assist with the student's transition between home and school
- Translating for registering students in the building
- Making phone calls to pre-k student families for registration
- Calling parents of sick students for nurse
- Translating during sight and hearing tests for nurse
- Answering phone calls for parents
- Calling parents as needed
- Calling transportation department to see what buses students are on and for pick up and drop off changes
- Calling families for free and reduced lunch application questions
- Translating for parents and staff at IEP meetings
- Writing library book notices
- Translating for p/t conferences
- Calling and translating in person for truancy
- Translate permission slips
- Calling parents about needing vaccinations for the nurse
- Calling parents for speech therapy
Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
- Implement the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives
- Prompt arrival and full effort throughout the duration of every shift
- Report suspected child abuse/neglect cases as required by statute and board policy
- Work cooperatively with other school personnel, students and parents
- Meet, as required, with students, parents, administrators and/or consultants
- Maintain accurate, complete and correct records and maintain confidentiality of same as required by law, board policy or building/department procedures
- Maintain student discipline with a focus on student safety in accordance with Board policy
- Assist the student one on one with all instructional and non-instructional tasks as assigned by the teacher
- Assist the student with the learning of content and skills introduced by the teacher
- Observe student behavior and learning, communicating observations regularly with the teacher
- Assist the teacher with clerical work, record keeping, and preparation of instructional materials, set up of centers, preparation of displays and bulletin boards, and other noninstructional tasks as assigned
- Assist the teacher and student with cleanup from activities
- Assist the student with movement among activities
- Assist the student with the use of specialized equipment
- Assist the teacher with supervision of the student
- Communicate with parents as directed by the teacher/supervisor
- Accompany and assist the teacher in supervision of student on approved instructional field trips
- Arrange furniture and equipment as necessary to accommodate student for various learning activities and experiences
- Assist student with preparing for and moving to other classrooms, school activities, outside activities and arrival and departure from school
- Help student with clothing, grooming, health habits, and bathroom activities
- Communicate to the teacher any unusual situations or needs of student
- Assist the teacher in managing interruptions and emergencies
- Maintain a safe working condition and safely operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities
