Associate/Senior Civil Engineer

The City of Petaluma is seeking Associate and Senior Civil Engineers to join its expanding Public Works Department.   • Salary Range
    : Associate Engineer: $ – $ annually
    Senior Civil Engineer: $ – $ annually

Class Characteristics

Associate Engineer

Journey‑level class in the professional engineering series (Assistant Engineer I/II & Associate Engineer) requiring registration as a professional engineer. The class requires assignment of the full range of professional engineering duties, including serving as project manager on assignments that demand considerable technical engineering knowledge, providing direction to engineering and technical personnel, and registering as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Traffic Engineer (TE).

Senior Civil Engineer

Advanced journey‑level class responsible for complex engineering duties, exercising direct supervision over assigned staff, and overseeing the planning, design, and construction of capital improvement projects.

Duties

Associate Engineer

  • Prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic systems, streets, wastewater, storm drains, potable water, recycled water, facilities, or related public works projects.
  • Coordinate activities with other city departments, divisions, and outside agencies; provide information over the counter and telephone.
  • Perform moderately difficult calculations and prepare estimates of time and material costs.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public, developers, engineers, contractors, and other city departments.
  • Review/approve construction of projects with staff, other departments, outside agencies, and members of the public; represent City to other governmental agencies.
  • Maintain records, maps, plans, and files; research and prepare clear technical reports.
  • Investigate field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations; order survey, mapping, and data collection.
  • Conduct field inspections and site investigations; perform engineering analysis and calculations as assigned.
  • Plan and conduct engineering studies; write reports and plans with recommendations; modify as directed.
  • Make presentations; serve as staff support to City Council, commissions, and review boards.
  • Assist in training and directing professional and technical staff; participate in selection and direction of engineering contract professionals; coordinate support services such as survey crews, technicians, and field crews.
