Located on the historic, 386-kilometre Trent-Severn Waterway in the heart of the Kawartha tourism region, Peterborough is a unique community known for its exceptional quality of life and beautiful setting. The city has been named one of 52 destinations to visit in 2025 by the New York Times.

The City has been shaped by its connection to the waterway, nature, and by the people who call it home. Peterborough is a community of doers and dreamers that are resourceful, passionate, creative and brimming with local pride.

Before it was ever known as Peterborough, this land was called Nogojiwanong – Ojibwe for "the place at the foot of the rapids." Today, the city remains continuously in motion, guided by a deep sense of community and connection. The City is located on the Treaty 20 Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg territory and in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Nations, known collectively as the Williams Treaty First Nations.

Responsibilities

The Economic Development Officer supports the City’s Economic Development Division by implementing, monitoring, and reporting on initiatives that advance Peterborough’s key economic sectors. This role leads project planning and execution, engages business and community stakeholders, and provides advisory support to local employers and investors.

Responsibilities include conducting economic research and data analysis, identifying funding opportunities, supporting policy development, and contributing to marketing, business retention and expansion and investment attraction efforts. The position also maintains economic content and investment‑ready property inventories, collaborates on workforce development strategies, and prepares reports and budget inputs, while supporting equity, diversity, and Truth and Reconciliation priorities in economic planning.

Qualifications

Qualifications include a university degree in Business Administration, Economic Development, Economics, Urban Planning, or a related field, with at least three years of progressive economic development experience, ideally in the public or municipal sector; a Master’s degree or Ec.D. certification is an asset.

The role requires strong knowledge of economic development processes, growth strategies, planning principles, marketing, and land development, along with excellent analytical, research, and report‑writing skills. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication, leadership, problem‑solving, and relationship‑building abilities, and be adaptable in a dynamic, innovative environment.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, economic development CRM tools, GIS, and graphic design software is required, along with strong presentation skills and the ability to attend offsite meetings and travel regularly.
