HOURS: Saturday to Wednesday 3:00pm – 10:00pm, On-Call Rotation, Days, Nights, and Weekends as needed.

POSITION PURPOSE

YWCA Peterborough Haliburton provides safe, secure, confidential crisis, and support services to women and their children in Haliburton and Peterborough Counties who have experienced abuse while working within the YWCA philosophy and policy guidelines.

Reporting to the Crossroads Shelter Manager, the Crossroads Shelter Team Lead supports the Shelter Manager in the daily operations of the shelter. In conjunction with the Shelter Manager, the Team Lead is responsible for ensuring Crossroads provides safety and support for women and their children who are leaving an abusive situation in accordance with YWCA values, policies, procedure and guidelines, and within prescribed legislation, regulations and standards.

Service activities include 24/7 crisis telephone line, intakes, safety planning, discharges, emotional support and referrals, case management, housing support and goal planning. Crossroads Shelter and the Crisis Telephone line operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The Team Lead is responsible for achieving and maintaining exceptional customer service in the overall delivery of client services at our GBV/VAW shelter. The Team Lead contributes to providing leadership and oversight to the Crossroads team, ensuring that performance expectations are met and exceeded. This role involves guiding and supporting Shelter Counsellors and Well-Being Workers through regular coaching and mentoring and fostering their professional growth and development.

Additionally, the Team Lead cultivates a positive work environment that emphasizes teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect among all employees (both within the team, as well as across teams). The Team Lead will establish and maintain transparent communication that bolsters team coordination, addresses disagreements, and promotes an open exchange of ideas and thoughts. The Team Lead regularly evaluates staff performance, offers constructive feedback in a strengths-based manner, and supports professional development to strengthen the overall effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery.

MAJOR

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager on building capacity within the Crossroads team to deliver high quality services and programs for women and children accessing the GBV/VAW shelter.
  • In consultation with the Shelter Manager, support preparing and maintaining client and staff policy documents, guidelines, and manuals.
  • Support shelter team member's performance, fostering teamwork and collaborative relationships through effective communication.
  • Promote fair and equitable staff treatment, creating a workplace that consistently supports human resources and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Engage in orientation, training, and evaluation processes to meet service and program staffing requirements.
  • Coordinate and supervise client services to address client needs effectively, managing resources for optimal support.
  • Lead dispute resolution efforts on-site involving clients, employing collaborative processes to achieve constructive and positive outcomes.
  • Assist with and attend case conferences as needed for clients.
  • Assist Shelter Manager in ensuring client case files are being filed properly and that assessment are accurately completed.
  • Uphold the shelter's quality standards in both environment and programing adhering to funder established mandate.
  • Responding to, directing, and implementing appropriate interventions for client crisis situations.
  • Actively participate in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment by identifying potential health and safety concerns and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Community promptly with the Shelter Manager regarding shelter/client issues, complaints, incidents and serious occurrences.
  • As part of the rotation of on-call supervisors, respond to overnight phone calls from staff requiring guidance and/or support.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
  • 4-year post-secondary degree in social services or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years progressively responsible experience or at least 1-year supervisory experience, preferably in a shelter setting.
  • Expertise in conflict transformation / resolution.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of:
    • Violence against women (VAW) and children living in both urban and rural areas
    • Shelter programs and services and the management and development of same
    • Legislation and funder’s standards governing shelters
  • Supervisory experience in a unionized environment, including providing instructions and guidance to staff within the context of a collective agreement.
  • High level of commitment to service provision from feminist, trauma- and violence-informed, anti-oppressive and harm reduction frameworks.
