Murray Street Baptist Church (MSBC), a historic church in downtown Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, seeks a full‑time pastor who has spiritual maturity, wisdom, energy, enthusiasm, and passion for discipling, mobilizing, and motivating people to further the church’s mission of spreading the Kingdom of God throughout the surrounding urban community.
Overview of Church and CommunityMSBC is a historic Baptist congregation located in the traditional inner‑city setting of Peterborough.
Church Purpose | Mission StatementThe pastor will faithfully and humbly follow in the footsteps of Christ in teaching, mentoring, and equipping members and adherents of MSBC to grow in faith and share the love of Jesus through all ministries inside and outside the church walls.
Qualifications and Education Requirements- Ordained, accredited with CBOQ or willing to become accredited with CBOQ.
- Masters of Divinity or equivalent.
- Become a member of MSBC and adhere to the Church Covenant, Constitution, and By‑Law.
- Comply with the Child Safety Policy.
- Ordination recognized by CBOQ. Candidates not currently recognized must be eligible and willing to have their ordination assessed and affirmed by CBOQ.
- Accreditation in good standing with CBOQ is required; candidates not currently accredited must be eligible and willing to pursue accreditation and maintain good standing as a condition of continued employment.
It is vital for the pastor to be able to communicate MSBC’s approach to ministry through effective biblical preaching. The pastor will preach on a regular basis, with occasional guest speakers from within the congregation or outside. Together with the worship deacon, the pastor will oversee the planning and execution of all worship services.
Ministry Development- Develop leadership: mentor potential leaders and collaborate with ministry team members and the Board of Deacons (BOD) to develop leadership within the church.
- Oversee ministries: provide oversight to all church ministries.
Build relationships outside the church by connecting with people, businesses, and the broader culture. This includes maintaining ties with Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ), Canadian Baptist Ministries, Trent Valley Association, and other local ministries.
Pastoral CareOversee visitation of seniors and others in the congregation in collaboration with the spiritual care and discipleship deacon. Minister to people in crisis, weddings, funerals, and other pastoral needs as required.
Personal and Spiritual Development- Take one workday monthly for quiet and renewal.
- Engage in opportunities for professional development in accordance with CBOQ guidelines.
Embrace the current vision of MSBC and develop action plans to implement it through congregational ministries, strategic outreach, and community connection.
AdministrationSupervise staff and the Church Office, attend BOD meetings and task teams as needed.
Gifts, Abilities, and Attributes- Preaching: biblical, relevant, coherent, effective, and Spirit‑directed; experience with a variety of styles, reaching people in all seasons of spiritual and physical walks of life.
- Pastoral: spiritually and emotionally astute, accessible, sensitive; nurturing, caring, and possessing effective communication and listening skills.
- Spiritually mature.
- Love for the urban setting; ability to see the big picture of the cultural, generational, socio‑economic, and gender issues that impact the community, and willingness to partner with other churches and organizations.
- Facilitator/motivator; capable of encouraging, training, developing, teaching, and inspiring lay leaders and the congregation; strong leadership skills.
- Passion for evangelism; heart for unbelievers and desire to reach them, win them to Christ and teach others to do the same.
- Appreciative of the importance of music in worship; comfortable with various forms of worship music.
- Adaptable and able to manage change.
- Experience in a congregational church setting; leads by building consensus.
- Effective and communicative interpersonal skills.
- Skilled in social media, technology, and email.
- The pastor will provide leadership to the ministry team and the congregation members.
- Decisions are made by members of MSBC during business meetings.
- The pastor is accountable to the congregation of MSBC through the Board of Deacons, which includes Executive, Chair, Vice‑Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and seven portfolio areas:
Spiritual Care/Discipleship, Evangelism/Missions, Community Engagement, Media, Worship, Finance, and Property.
