D.M. Wills Associates Limited is seeking a Field Biologist to join our Natural Sciences Group within the Environmental Services Department. This is a contract position, with an expected start date in May 2026, and the potential to transition into a full‑time permanent role based on performance and project needs.

In this role, you’ll be involved in a wide range of field tasks in diverse conditions, strengthening your technical skills and broadening your expertise across multiple areas of environmental work. This role is well‑suited for those looking to grow their career through challenging, hands‑on project experience.

Reporting to the Natural Sciences Group Leader, the Field Biologist will support ecological field programs and assist in preparing technical documents, including Environmental Impact Studies and Natural Heritage Assessments, for example.

This position is ideal for an entry‑level, field‑oriented biologist or a student looking to gain hands‑on experience in ecological monitoring and reporting. It offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who thrive in a physically demanding, fast‑paced, and collaborative team environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field investigations and data collection (e.g., wildlife, vegetation, wetland, and stream surveys).
  • Analyze ecological data and assist in preparing technical reports.
  • Identify flora and fauna, with a focus on habitat classification and species at risk.
  • Assist with project planning and field program implementation.
  • Follow health and safety protocols in both field and office settings.
Experience, Qualifications and Skills
  • Currently enrolled in or have completed a post‑secondary diploma or degree in environmental sciences or a related field.
  • Valid Class G driver's license and willingness to travel throughout Ontario – often overnight for several days at a time.
  • Minimum one year of experience conducting biological survey protocols, including:
  • Fish sampling (including electrofishing).
  • Wetland delineations.
  • Ecological Land Classification (ELC).
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario flora and fauna, including visual and auditory identification of birds and amphibians.
  • For some projects, endurance of up to ~20 km/day hikes through various terrain and conditions is possible.
  • Electrofishing experience is considered an asset.
  • Ability to summarize field observations and data into clear field notes and contribute to technical reports.
  • Strong technical writing and data analysis skills; ability to interpret environmental policies and legislation.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps) is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, and complete data entry and reporting in an office setting.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, based on project requirements.
