OverviewAs a remediation specialist, you will assess and reduce contamination levels in soil and water. Your duties include reporting on samples, advising on clean‑up methods, and collaborating with environmental geologists, hydrologists, and toxicologists to determine the most effective remediation options.
Responsibilities- Collecting and assessing groundwater, sediment, and surface water samples to check contamination levels
- Choosing the most effective remediation systems
- Preparing reports to communicate findings
- Organising and overseeing specialist contractors
- Designing and implementing remedial action plans
- Assessing contamination and advising on how to transform sites into a safe, legal and usable state
- Measuring impact following remedial work and ensuring continued site safety and preservation
- Working on‑site or in an office
You can become a remediation specialist by completing an undergraduate degree in a subject related to engineering, construction, soil science or environmental science. If you are unable or prefer not to pursue a degree, alternative routes include a college course, apprenticeship or direct entry to a specialist remediation company.

Complete a college course such as Construction and the Built Environment or an environmental studies course, then specialise in remediation.

An apprenticeship related to construction, the built environment or environmental studies can lead to a remediation specialist role. Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16, and typically involve a minimum of 30 hours a week of on‑the‑job training along with college or training provider sessions.

Practical experience is essential. You may gain this by working with a specialist remediation company, starting as an assistant and progressing as your abilities improve.
