The Principal provides leadership and oversight to every aspect of the school's instructional program and operations in a manner that fosters the success of all students. The Principal is responsible for the creation and implementation of a shared vision of teaching and learning that is aligned with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) and supports the accomplishment of the goals of the Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) Strategic Plan and the designated School Improvement Plan.
The Principal supervises and evaluates all PCPS teachers and support staff assigned to the school. The Principal works to create and maintain a school learning environment that is simultaneously open and welcoming yet safe and orderly. The Principal communicates and supports high expectations for the performance and conduct of students, staff, and parents. The Principal oversees the maintenance and operation of the school's physical plant and provides effective management of the school's fiscal and material resources.
Considerable professional judgment is required.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides leadership and oversight to the daily operation of the assigned school within the framework of the regulations of the VDOE and the goals and policies of the PCPS School Board.
- Oversees the school's instructional program, including the execution of the written, taught and tested curriculum aligned in content and cognitive level to the SOL; the selection and provision of aligned textbooks, supplies, and instructional resources; and the utilization of research-based instructional strategies.
- Develops and implements a schedule that utilizes time to maximize the teaching and learning process for teachers and students.
- Analyzes student and school academic performance data, by grade and by discipline, and modifies the school's instructional programs as warranted to promote a rigorous program of studies and the continuous improvement of outcomes for all students.
- Supervises, supports, and evaluates all teachers assigned to the school in accordance with Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers and PCPS policies.
- Provides guidance to teachers regarding explicit expectations for implementing the written, taught, and tested curriculum and provides written, evidence-based feedback to teachers following classroom observations.
- Supervises and evaluates the performance of support staff at the assigned school in accordance with PCPS policies and criteria.
- Leads the implementation of all essential actions (pertinent to the designated school) as outlined in the PCPS Corrective Action Plan and/or VDOE Office of School Improvement (OSI) Academic Review.
- Collaborates with the school leadership team and appropriate division leaders to design and implement a School Improvement Plan that is based on student performance data and the findings of a school-based comprehensive needs assessment.
- Develops and oversees the implementation of the school-based Professional Learning Plan that is aligned with the PCPS Strategic Plan and the School Improvement Plan.
- Works collaboratively with staff and faculty to ensure that all programs, services, staffing and budgetary allocations support optimum academic achievement for all students.
- Oversees development of the budget for the school and assumes responsibility for the appropriate management of fiscal and material resources.
- Establishes and maintains open communication channels with all internal and external school stakeholders to involve parents and citizens in the educational program, to provide information on all aspects of school programs, opportunities, and expectations, and to advocate for the school and its students.
