Job Summary

The History Instructional Specialist provides school-level leadership in History by working collaboratively with classroom teachers, and other resource teachers, administrators, and central office instructional and support staff to plan and implement quality History/Social Sciences instruction as well as tiered interventions for students in need of differentiated support. The History/Social Sciences Instructional Specialist also provides professional development (PD) at the school site, evaluates students and student data to determine History/Social Sciences strengths and weaknesses, and assists with planning and implementation of additional support services in History/Social Sciences based on the data-driven needs at the school.

The History/Social Sciences Instructional Specialist plans his/her own work, in collaboration with Curriculum and Instruction Directors, with a focus on the provision of exemplary History/Social Sciences instruction (research-based and fully aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning for History/Social Sciences) to all identified students.

Essential Job functions
  • Collaborates with individual teachers or teams of teachers through co-planning, demonstration teaching,co-teaching and coaching to improve student outcomes in History/Social Sciences.
  • Supports teachers' understanding and delivery of the Virginia Standards of Learning (and Curriculum Framework) in History/Social Sciences through collaborative long-range and short-range planning (including unpacking the standards, writing aligned learner objectives, and effectively using district aligned curriculum resources).
  • Assists teachers in creating aligned formative assessments; collecting, analyzing and interpreting formative and summative assessment data; and designing or selecting targeted, developmentally appropriate aligned interventions to meet the needs of students in each performance tier.
  • Facilitates teachers' use of successful, research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners that enables students to progress from concrete to representational to abstract thinking.
  • Acts as a liaison among classroom teachers, intervention/resource teachers, and any other supplemental service providers working with History/Social Sciences instruction.
  • Analyzes and uses data to identify professional development needs of individual teachers or groups of teachers in History/Social Sciences; plans and delivers (or collaborates on delivery of) staff development activities for teachers that are responsive to the data and supportive of the goals of the PCPS Strategic Plan, the PCPS Corrective Action Plan, and individual Comprehensive School Support Plan.
  • Assists administration in identifying school strengths and weaknesses in History/Social Sciences and supports responses that maximize student engagement and student achievement outcomes in the school.
  • Incorporates and models appropriate selection and use of technology to support History/Social Sciences instruction.
  • Provides professional development to teachers in a variety of group formats using collaborative investigations, discussion groups, book/lesson study, modeling or other methods that engage adult learners while demonstrating effective research-based instructional strategies in K-12 History/Social Sciences.
  • Conducts non-evaluative observations of History/Social Sciences teaching and learning in order to provide evidence-based feedback to teachers and improve instruction and maximize the impact on student outcomes.
  • Meets regularly with the Curriculum Instructional Specialist Team and assists, as appropriate, in development of PCPS curriculum, instruction, and assessment resources; provides training on use of resources, demonstrating how they support horizontal and vertical alignment of the written, taught and tested curricula in History/Social Sciences.
  • Collaborates with staff on instructional programs and initiatives to provide extended day/extended year learning opportunities in History/Social Sciences (field trips, after-school activities, family events, and summer programs).
