Job Overview
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. Crater Health District is looking for an experienced Certified Nurse Practitioner Senior to provide patient care with limited or no on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. The role includes performing physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, prescribing controlled substances, directing nursing assessments, conducting lab tests and measurements, and developing and implementing care plans, including medication administration and case management.
Licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code is required.
- Provide patient care as a nurse practitioner, independently performing or directing nursing assessments.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests as needed for patient evaluation.
- Prescribe controlled substances and manage medication regimens.
- Conduct physical examinations and take measurements.
- Develop and implement comprehensive care plans, including case management.
- Maintain clinical judgment and recognize limits of practice, seeking consultation when appropriate.
- Demonstrated knowledge of nursing practice and health principles, physical examination techniques and findings both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology.
- Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care, and provide health education to clients.
- Ability to develop patient management plans; excellent clinical judgement with the ability to know the limits of practice and when to seek consultation.
- Demonstrated ability to work without direct supervision; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, patients and the public; ability to participate in educational and professional programs.
- CPR/BLS certification.
- Prior public health or community health experience with significant clinical experience in prenatal, STI, family planning, pediatrics, and Family Nurse Practitioner roles is preferred.
