Job Overview

Hiram W. Davis Medical Center is one of 12 inpatient facilities operated by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. The 94‑bed facility provides acute medical diagnoses, skilled care, intermediate care, and long‑term care for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Admissions are typically either permanent placement or special hospitalization for step‑down to stabilize, post‑surgery rehabilitation, or long‑term care.

The Safety Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well‑being of residents, patients, employees, and visitors. The position is available seven days a week from 7 am to 11 pm.

Responsibilities Facility Access and Control
  • Control facility access by monitoring doors and cameras and allowing entry only when appropriate.
  • Issue and track visitor badges, ensuring all visitors sign in before badges are issued and notifying staff of visitor arrivals.
  • Relay messages and information between visitors, staff, and departments.
  • Maintain logs of all access and safety incidents, providing a record‑keeping measure to track security activity and identify potential risks.
Environment of Care and Safety Rounds
  • Conduct hourly EOC and safety rounds, walking the facility to identify potential hazards such as loose wires, wet floors, obstructed walkways, broken equipment, unsecured objects, and open or unsecured doors.
  • Visually inspect fire extinguishers to ensure they are properly mounted, charged, and labeled.
Emergency and Safety Management
  • Assist with incoming after‑hours calls, including answering phones, taking messages, and responding to inquiries from residents, patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Follow detailed instructions and SOPs during code situations, implementing the facility’s emergency response plan.
  • Keep the Facility Emergency Manager updated on all unusual occurrences and report incidents that could lead to an emergency.
  • Ensure notifications occur according to SOP, alerting appropriate personnel of emergencies or incidents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including training and staff education, emergency drills, escorting residents or patients, supervising individuals in need of close observation, implementing interim life safety measures, receiving after‑hour deliveries, and making state vehicle runs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations, with ability to apply them effectively.
  • Strong problem‑solving and communication skills to address safety concerns promptly.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively, fostering a safety culture.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, recognizing potential hazards and taking proactive measures.
  • Physical capability to conduct safety inspections and respond swiftly to emergencies.
  • In certain situations, interact with residents or patients to implement therapeutic safety options.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience in customer service and proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Additional Considerations
  • Preferred experience with mass communication tools.
  • Preferred familiarity with IDD patients.
