Job Description

Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree, master’s or higher, from an accredited institution with emphasis in educational leadership, school administration, curriculum or other related field.
  • Valid state certificate to practice as a school principal, or completion of a school administrator’s continuing education requirement.
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
  • Successful teaching, coaching and administrative experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and community.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership that results in teamwork and collaborative working relationships.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To: Superintendent

Supervises: Middle School Coaches, High School Coaches, Athletic Secretary, and those directed by the Superintendent.

Primary Function: To provide leadership in the development, organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the athletic programs. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for planning, program evaluation, personnel management, and financial management while meeting the educational needs of students as stated in District Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, and established curriculum.

In addition, assist the middle school and high school principals in promoting an environment which enhances the educational well‑being of each student; while helping the school be attractive, pleasant and a productive place in which to learn and work.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Maintain an active athletic program that promotes sportsmanship and welcomes competing teams/guests.
  • Provide leadership in the selection and assignment of athletic coaches.
  • Evaluate members of the coaching staff on an annual basis.
  • Direct all aspects of game management, including arrangements for game officials, facilities, game related instruction, financial remuneration, crowd and traffic control, direct sale of tickets, counting, banking of receipts, and other issues pertinent to game management.
  • Direct inventory, repair, distribution, and purchase of equipment.
  • Foster good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
  • Be responsible for promoting athletic programs locally and state‑wide.
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with all local media (newspaper, radio, T.V., etc.).
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with the city recreation program and the community college.
  • Assume responsibility for organizing and scheduling all interscholastic athletic events in the school system.
  • Arrange transportation for participation in athletic contests, including charter buses.
  • Develop and implement the appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities.
  • Establish the physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete’s eligibility.
  • Be responsible for coordinating and managing the athletic budgets.
  • Requisition, in cooperation with appropriate staff members, the supplies, uniforms, and equipment for the athletic programs—within the constraints of the approved budget.
  • Make arrangements for visiting teams’ needs, including lodging, meals, gymnasium services, and field assistance.
  • Make all necessary arrangements for the use of non‑school playing fields and facilities.
  • Arrange the practice schedules for coaches (fields and gymnasiums) in cooperation with the building use coordinator.
  • Help supervise the halls and lunchroom.
  • Works with the high school and middle school principal and staff.
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the superintendent.
  • Attend all District and High School Admin meetings.
Terms of Employment
