Probate Court - Juvenile Probation Officer

Supervises juveniles as required by court. Coordinates community-based services for juveniles under court jurisdiction or at risk of court jurisdiction, with a focus on maintaining juveniles in their homes as opposed to out-of-home placements. Responsibilities must be performed in a manner that considers the safety of the juvenile, the community, and others.

• Performs duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Conducts screenings and assessments of juveniles, gathers collateral information, and formulates service plans for juveniles under court jurisdiction or at risk of coming within court jurisdiction. Investigates background of juveniles and families to identify reasons for problems and to develop goals and objectives for change.
• Counsels juveniles and families to identify and resolve barriers to the juvenile’s success. Coordinates community-based services as needed.
• Consults regularly with juveniles and their families as required by the court or the case services plan. Maintains regular contact with school, law enforcement, therapists, community agencies, and other professionals to monitor progress of the juvenile and their families. This may involve contacts at the juvenile’s home, school, appointments, community services, and/or at school meetings, such as IEP or behavior plan meetings.
• Routinely and randomly drug screen juveniles as ordered, up to daily screening. This may include screenings during evening and weekend hours.
• Facilitates and monitors groups during or after work hours. This may require obtaining requisite certifications.
• Assists with court school programming at Lakeview Academy, as needed. This may include searches, groups, attending an off-campus activity, and covering a classroom, lunchroom or transition room.
• Transports juveniles to and from home, school, appointments, etc. as required. May also be required to transport juveniles to or from detention or residential placements.
• Documents necessary information through ongoing case notes and records; completes reports to meet reporting requirements.
• Creates comprehensive detailed reports for court at initial plea/disposition, probation violation or show cause hearings, and review hearings. Participates in court hearings involving juveniles, including testifying as required.
• Investigates, secures, and arranges placements in detention or residential settings and any necessary transportation.
• Attends seminars and meetings to stay current on juvenile law and new and innovative intervention techniques for juveniles and families. Attends trainings for certifications required for screenings and assessments, facilitating groups, utilizing GPS and other monitoring systems, or as otherwise required.
• Attends activities with juveniles, such as community service work sites, college or vocational school visits, and physical activities such as hiking and camping.

Bachelor’s degree in social work, criminal justice, psychology, or related field. Probation experience preferred.

• Must be willing to comply with the Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trial Court Employees.
• Must have or be willing to obtain Michigan Juvenile Probation Officer certification.
• Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
