Temporary, seasonal position that manages the complete daily operations of the summer camp program including supervision of camp participants. Interfaces directly with city management and employees, other departmental employees, parents of campers, and the general public. To identify and meet camper needs by carrying out the requested activities and structure throughout the day with special attention paid to group and individual needs of safety and Pfun Camp values.

  • Supervise all assigned aspects of Pfun Camp safety and regulations of the campers' day including morning arrival, appropriate care of personal items, meal/snack times, rest periods, activities, and after-camp-hours duty as assigned.
  • Learn the likes/dislikes of each participant.
  • Guide groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.
  • Recognize and respond to opportunities for teaching problem solving abilities for campers in the group.
  • Develop opportunities for interaction between campers and staff.
  • Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp.
  • Encourage opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.
  • Help each participant meet the goals established by the camp for camper development.
  • Help campers plan their participation in unit-wide or camp-wide programs, special events, and activities.
  • Assist in teaching, preparing for, or leading an activity, as assigned.
  • Write-up and report accurately incident and injury records on all participants, as needed.
  • Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy.
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain good public relations with campers' parents.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean-up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Other related duties as required or assigned, including minor maintenance activities.

Work Experience:

Must be at least 16 years old. Experience working with children ages 5 to 13 years old.
Training, Licenses, and

Certifications:

Adult and Child CPR (must be able to obtain before the start of camp);
Standard First Aid (must be able to obtain before the start of camp);
American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue Course.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in daily operations of summer day camps, after-school camps or related activities;
Experience planning a broad range of activities including but not limited to sports, games, arts & crafts, music and field trips.

  • Knowledge of child development, what to expect of children in different situations, and group management techniques.
  • Knowledge and skills in group activity planning in order to teach skills to staff.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with external public/vendors, internal management and non-management employees, and City and other government officials.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for providing effective and efficient services for the City.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, as well as strong time and task management skills.
  • Ability to supervise program assistants and make scheduling assignments.
  • Ability to work with children and adults in an outdoor camp setting.
  • Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
  • Ability to assist in teaching activities.
  • Ability to adapt to unexpected changes in camp routines with ease.
  • Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff of counselors and large groups of children ages 6 - 15.
  • Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office and outdoor environment.
  • Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment.
  • Occasional strenuous physical activity, including carrying, pulling, pushing, dragging, swimming and holding up to 30 lbs. of furniture/equipment.
  • Routine exposure to loud noise and large crowds of people.
  • Weekend and holiday schedule, as needed for special events/programs.
  • Work may routinely require the employee to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, run, and/or crawl.
  • Regularly scheduled for 5-day, 45-hour workweek, Monday through Friday; overtime occasionally required.
