Utility Systems Worker I – $40,760–$50,950

Utility Systems Worker II – $47,185–$58,980

Utility Systems Worker III – $54,620–$68,275

This is the entry‑level class in the line maintenance series. Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of routine to skilled work in the installation, repair, construction, and maintenance of the City’s water distribution system, wastewater collection systems, and related appurtenances. Receives technical and functional direction and training from the Utility Systems Worker II and/or direct or general supervision from the Utility Systems Worker III.

Incumbents advance to higher levels as experience, licenses, and certifications are obtained.

• Inspect, install, maintain, and repair valves, water distribution pipelines, and related appurtenances; inspect and test lines in the distribution system; thread and fit pipes.
• Inspect water services for compliance with established codes and/or damaged or worn parts, and make repairs as necessary; perform preventative maintenance adjustments.
• Perform water valve and hydrant maintenance.
• Turn on and off main line valves, hydrants, and fire service lines.
• Report water service defects and public safety hazards, including providing exception list information and reporting hazards to supervisors.
• Turn water service on or off.
• Use backhoe to start trenches or make minor excavations, place shoring where required, and make necessary installations and repairs to distribution and collection pipelines.
• Operate and maintain specialized vehicles and light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment and trucks appropriate for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s infrastructure.
• Perform safety and service inspections of assigned trucks and equipment; steam clean, wash, and fuel equipment; assist in lubrication and maintenance of equipment.
• Install street barricades and cones and control traffic around work sites to ensure safe conditions for the general public and City workers.

• Provide technical and functional direction to assigned line maintenance staff; review and control quality of work; assist in completing employee evaluations; participate in performing line maintenance work.
• Coordinate with contractors and developers regarding shutdowns, tie‑ins, and pressure tests.
• Plan, organize, assign, supervise, and review the work of assigned staff in line maintenance.
• Train staff in work and safety procedures and in the operation and use of equipment and supplies; implement procedures and standards.
• Provide input on employee performance evaluations; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures; assist in selection and promotion.
• Monitor operations and activities of line maintenance; recommend improvements and modifications; prepare various reports; recommend and assist in implementing goals and objectives; implement policies and procedures.
