Job Overview

With minimal direct supervision, the individual in this role assumes leadership of their assigned crews, overseeing the execution of daily tasks and responsibilities. They are also responsible for performing tasks that are typically delegated to subordinates when necessary. Their primary interactions are with fellow personnel within public works operations, with occasional engagement with personnel from other City departments and members of the general public.

Under the guidance of the Operations Superintendent, their core responsibilities encompass assigning and supervising maintenance crews and contractors, installation oversight, training and guidance, regular inspections, documentation management, and budget contribution.

Compensation

Salary: $80,700 - $100,870 annually. Starting salary depends on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Assigning and Supervising Maintenance Crews and Contractors: tasked with assigning and supervising in‑house maintenance crews and external contractors for upkeep of City‑maintained streets, sidewalks, signs, and signals.
  • Installation Oversight: coordinate and assist installation of new traffic signals, and oversee installation and maintenance of signs, street and sidewalk repair initiatives. Collaboration with engineers and electricians may be necessary to ensure proper installation and functioning.
  • Training and Guidance: provide comprehensive training and guidance to crew members, focusing on safety protocols and correct maintenance techniques.
  • Regular Inspections: conduct routine inspections to proactively identify issues with traffic signals, signs, streets, and sidewalks.
  • Documentation Management: maintain meticulous records of maintenance and repair activities, work orders, and equipment replacements. Report on overall condition of all projects, equipment, and personnel under supervision.
  • Budget Contribution: play a pivotal role in budgeting by providing input on required materials, equipment and personnel for continuous maintenance and enhancement of traffic signals, signs, street and sidewalk infrastructure.
  • Remain accessible via personal cell phone to address job‑related issues or emergencies through City applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Formal

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Relatable

Work Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in strategic planning work. Six (6) months of experience in a supervisory role. Valid Texas driver’s license.

Training, Licenses, or

Certifications:

Class A CDL.

Disclaimer:
Unless otherwise stated, applicants may substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full‑time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge

and Skills

Knowledge pertaining to the construction, operation, and maintenance of public works infrastructures; sound working knowledge of and ability to apply general management principles and personnel policies and procedures.

Knowledge of the budgeting process, applicable state, city, and federal regulations/guidelines pertaining to areas of responsibility, and overall city operations.

Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software programs, including Windows and Microsoft Office applications.

Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with external public/vendors, internal management and non‑management employees, and City and other government officials.

Ability to develop, implement, and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for providing effective and efficient services for the City.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, as well as strong time and task management skills.

Ability to effectively and safely operate light trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, truckhoes, tractors with shredders or augers, grade‑alls, lawn tractors, trenchers, weed eaters, trailers, shop tools, and various hand tools.

Physical requirements:

subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office and outdoor environment, including extreme weather. Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment. Regularly scheduled for a 40‑hour workweek with overtime occasionally required. Walking, bending, pushing, pulling, sitting, standing, and lifting up to 100 lbs. Ability to effectively operate computer and other standard office equipment.
