Transportation Engineer Specialist III or IV

Position Overview:

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Pharr District is seeking a skilled Transportation Engineer Specialist III or IV to join our Central Design office in Pharr, TX. The role focuses on engineering design, drafting, calculations, and field work to create safer roadways across the United States.

Salary Range

Transportation Engineer Specialist III (B20): $66,000 – $81,351 annually ($5,500 – $6,779.25 monthly)
Transportation Engineer Specialist IV (B21): $69,600 – $87,046 annually ($5,800 – $7,253.83 monthly)

Essential Duties
  • Receive project assignments and determine work requirements to complete project plans.
  • Perform advanced and specialized design, drafting, and calculations, including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls, and building design.
  • Prepare quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies, right‑of‑way maps, roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Review entire sets of plans for format, drafting, and calculation errors and ensure correlation with specifications.
  • Train less experienced technicians.
  • Use automated design tools and interactive graphics, including the Design and Construction Information System.
  • Serve as lead worker for projects when required.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high‑school studies.

Experience:

  • Transportation Engineer Specialist III: 8 years drafting, design, and plan preparation.
  • Transportation Engineer Specialist IV: 9 years drafting, design, and plan preparation.
Experience may be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Licenses &

Certifications:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license – required for driving a state vehicle.

Competencies (Selected):

  • Advanced and specialized design and drafting procedures.
  • Computer‑aided drafting and design systems.
  • Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities.
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Exercising logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make decisions aligned with business objectives.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally carry files or small tools.
  • Requires speaking and expressing ideas verbally.
  • Job identified as physically demanding; a pre‑employment physical is required.
  • Position may be subject to random drug testing if designated a Safety Impact by responsibilities.
