Position: G.I.S. Technician
Role Summary

The G.I.S. Technician supports the City of Pharr by maintaining accurate, usable geographic data that informs utility operations, Capital Improvement Projects, and parcel mapping. This role ensures GIS and related mapping outputs are reliable for internal teams and the public.

Key responsibilities include GIS data collection, data analysis, database management, and producing map/data outputs of moderate difficulty for residential, public, and commercial needs.

Required knowledge and skills include:

* Working knowledge of GIS principles, terminology, and modern land-based mapping theory.

* ESRI ArcGIS Platform (ArcGIS, Arc Catalog, Arc Server, ArcSDE; v10.0+ preferred) and extensions (e.g., Spatial Analyst)

* Autodesk AutoCAD Map (v2014+ preferred) and web-enabled GIS tools

* Installing/configuring and troubleshooting GIS hardware/peripherals (printers/plotters, GPS devices)

* Sound judgment, problem definition, and technical manual comprehension.

* Strong customer service and collaborative relationship-building.

Typical Workday

You'll start onsite by reviewing incoming requests and priorities, then shift between updating map layers, validating records, and preparing clear outputs for stakeholders. Midday may include coordinating with departments to confirm locations or resolve data questions, followed by time spent organizing datasets and ensuring standards are met. When needed, you'll step into basic CAD drafting for simple plan sets, or support occasional field efforts such as minor surveying, speed surveys, drone imagery collection, or fiber optic line locate coordination.

The schedule is full-time (40 hours, non-exempt), with flexibility for evenings, weekends, or holidays when operational needs arise.

Must pass a thorough criminal background check due to the sensitivity of the information handled by this position.
