POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR ST. CLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM

TITLE:Transportation Mechanic

JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation of students

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director and Transportation Shop Foreman

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to visit school sites throughout the county as assigned by the Transportation Director
  • Possess and maintain a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (or obtain within six (6) months of hire), a current Alabama Bus Certificate (or obtain within six (6) months of date of hire), and a current/valid DOT physical.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience as a mechanic or related field
  • Possess and maintain an Alabama school bus mechanic’s certification or be able to obtain in a timely manner
  • Possess knowledge and basic skills related to automotive repair and parts
  • Good public relations skills
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. .
  • Demonstrate ability, agility, and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, climbing, and reaching
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, heights, indoors, outdoors, noisy/quiet environments, and during inclement weather
  • Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule (after hours, on weekends, and holidays when necessary)
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move 50 pounds
  • Ability to identify mechanical problems, to implement preventative maintenance programs, and follow requirement safety rules
  • Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the board may require
  • PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and
  • Demonstrates the ability to multi-task and to prioritize tasks
  • Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its
  • Demonstrates and models regular and predictable
  • Demonstrates professional appearance and demeanor at all times
  • Collaborates with the Transportation Director to evaluate mechanical needs and bus improvements.
  • Assists Transportation Director to monitor safety inspections on buses as required by the state of Alabama.
  • Completes the schedule for vehicle maintenance projects and/or
  • Performs maintenance and inspection on all Clair County Board of Education equipment and vehicles including changing tires, lubricating, changing oil, etc.
  • Assists the Parts Specialist with inventory control of parts, tires, materials, supplies, fuel, and oil that is used by the transportation department.

  • Accurately diagnoses and repairs school system automotive
  • Operates school system-owned vehicles in accordance with state laws and board
  • Provides roadside rescues and repairs for buses and other
  • Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and materials owned by the school
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Serves on school system committees, task forces, and representative groups as
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with board policies and
  • Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Transportation

  • SALARY:
    Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule


    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    12 month
