Position Summary

The Accounting & Business Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial, administrative, and business operations of a rural nonprofit organization. This role ensures sound fiscal management, regulatory compliance, and efficient day-to-day operations that support the organization’s mission and sustainability.

This position requires a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who can manage multiple responsibilities, work independently, and collaborate with leadership in a small-team rural environment. The person in this role reports directly to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage general ledger and financial records of programs,
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Reconcile bank statements and provide bank account reports
  • Process bi-weekly payroll and tax filings
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Process bi-annual workman’s compensation audit
  • Prepare invoices and track payments
  • Develop annual organizational budget (in collaboration with leadership) and provide monthly progress reports
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP) and grant requirements along with company policies and financial regulations
  • Coordinate and support annual audits and tax filings (e.g., Form 990)
  • Manage cash flow and financial forecasting
  • Oversee restricted and unrestricted funds tracking
  • Maintain organized filing system
  • Support accountant during preparation of annual financial statements

Grants & Compliance

  • Track grant funding, expenditures, and reporting requirements
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Support grant writing, budgeting, and reporting as needed
  • Maintain documentation for audits and funders

Business & Operations Management

  • Oversee administrative functions including HR support, insurance, and contracts
  • Assist with policy development and organizational procedures
  • Coordinate fundraising efforts and donor relations
  • Manage vendor relationships and purchasing processes
  • Support facilities oversight (as applicable in rural setting)
  • Coordinate technology, systems, and office operations

Human Resources Support

  • Process payroll and maintain employee records
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and benefits administration
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and policies
  • Assist leadership with performance management processes

Strategic & Leadership Support

  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to Executive Director and Board
  • Prepare financial reports for and present at the Board of Directors quarterly meetings
  • Support strategic planning and sustainability initiatives
  • Help identify opportunities for operational efficiency

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of accounting or financial management experience
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and practices
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, Sage, or similar)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Office Suite
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

Preferred

  • Experience working in a nonprofit or rural organization
  • Experience with grant management and reporting
  • Familiarity with payroll systems and HR administration
  • CPA or equivalent certification (preferred but not required)
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong ethical standards and confidentiality
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Adaptability and resourcefulness in a rural environment
  • Collaborative and mission-driven mindset

    Full-time position
  • Based in a rural setting; may require occasional travel within the community/region
  • Small team environment requiring flexibility and versatility
  • Annual Salary range: $48,000 - $52,000
