Controller – Accounting Operations, Inventory & Controls

We are seeking an experienced Controller - Accounting Operations, Inventory & Controls to join our team. This is a highly hands-on role responsible for ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of transactional accounting processes, subledgers, reconciliations, and financial controls across the organization. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working directly within accounting records to identify issues, resolve discrepancies, and implement sustainable accounting processes.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger & Financial Close

  • Maintain general ledger accounts and supporting schedules.
  • Ensure all subledgers reconcile accurately to the general ledger.
  • Prepare and review account reconciliations and journal entries with proper documentation.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies, unsupported balances, duplicate transactions, and classification issues.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded accurately by entity, department, location, and accounting period.

Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Payroll

  • Oversee accounting activities related to AP, AR, and payroll.
  • Review vendor invoices, payments, accruals, customer billing, cash application, deductions, and reconciliations.
  • Resolve aged balances, unapplied cash, billing discrepancies, disputed deductions, and payment issues.
  • Perform payroll accounting reconciliations, including taxes, benefits, and payroll-related general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain strong controls and segregation of duties across accounting functions.

Inventory & Cost Accounting

  • Manage accounting processes related to inventory, cost of goods sold, purchasing accruals, freight, reserves, and adjustments.
  • Reconcile inventory records and investigate valuation, quantity, costing, and margin variances.
  • Support physical inventory counts and cycle count programs.
  • Review inventory transfers, write-offs, reserve calculations, and related accounting entries.
  • Partner with operations and IT teams to resolve inventory system and reporting issues.

Cash, Fixed Assets, Leases & Intercompany Accounting

  • Prepare and review bank reconciliations.
  • Investigate reconciling items including outstanding checks, unidentified deposits, and bank exceptions.
  • Maintain fixed asset, depreciation, lease accounting, prepaid expense, and accrual schedules.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany transactions across multiple entities.
  • Support consolidation processes and elimination entries.

Process Improvement, Controls & Leadership

  • Identify process inefficiencies, control gaps, and automation opportunities.
  • Standardize accounting workflows, documentation, reconciliations, and reporting procedures.
  • Execute and document internal controls and support audit requirements.
  • Supervise accounting staff, provide coaching, review work, and ensure appropriate coverage for critical processes.
  • Escalate operational, staffing, system, or control-related concerns when necessary.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of accounting supervisory, management, or review experience.
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting and month-end close processes.
  • Expertise in reconciliations, discrepancy resolution, and root-cause analysis.
  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, fixed assets, prepaids, accruals, and intercompany accounting.
  • Strong inventory and cost accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting multi-entity or multi-location organizations.
  • Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with ERP/accounting systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and meet deadlines.
  • Must be available to work during US Central Time (CST) business hours
    , with additional flexibility during month-end and reporting periods.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA, CMA, CA, ACCA, or equivalent professional accounting certification.
  • Experience in food distribution, wholesale, retail, e-commerce, logistics, or other inventory-intensive industries.
  • Experience with in a U.S. public company environment.
  • Experience supporting external audits and preparing audit-ready documentation.
  • Proven track record of process improvement and accounting system enhancements.
  • Experience with inventory counts, reserves, freight accounting, purchase price variances, and gross margin analysis.
  • Experience managing remote, offshore, or distributed accounting teams.
