The person holding this position is responsible for preparing curriculum and providing instruction in the Arts department as well as providing organ and carillon music for community events. The vocal music teacher will lead all vocal music groups at Mercersburg, including Choral Performance (an academic course), Magalia and Octet (evening a capella groups), and Chapel Choir.

Teaching:
Teaching sections of specialized music programming, including chorus and a capella groups, and with the possibility of digital recording and/or music theory courses, preparing course objectives and course of study following departmental guidelines and curriculum, conducting varied and frequent assessments of student performance, utilizing appropriate technology in the classroom setting, keeping attendance and grade records as required by school, writing individual grade and comment reports six times a year with additional progress reports as assigned, maintaining regularly scheduled office hours for help sessions with students, attending faculty meetings and professional development opportunities provided by the school.

Co-curricular:
Performing organ and carillon music to accompany chapel services, school meetings, and other special events; provide vocal coaching during the winter musical.

Additionally, this position requires some combination of coaching, advising, and residential responsibilities, to be determined based on school needs and applicant experience.

Communication:
Communicating positively and proactively with students, advisers, parents, colleagues, and administration in a professional manner in both oral and written form. Engaging in productive collaboration with colleagues.

The position requires a person who has experience teaching adolescents and enjoys working with and relates well to both adults and students, is collaborative, and communicates well. This faculty member needs to be organized as well as possess excellent technology skills. Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of an ever-changing boarding school environment.

• Bachelor’s degree; master’s preferred.
• Extensive expertise in technology applications, including music technology, use of a Mac Book Pro and iPad for teaching purposes with specific knowledge of Google Suite.
• Prior experience in vocal music teaching, including knowledge of vocal pedagogy and rehearsal technique with various vocal styles, music theory, sight reading, and piano accompaniment;
• Expertise and experience in preparing students for performance, including selection of appropriate music and building skills in singing in varied ensembles;
• Experience fostering positive culture and collaboration within a classroom and department;
• Deep knowledge of, and an infectious passion for, a range of musical styles and traditions.
• Prior experience with curriculum development preferred
• Experience with Canvas LMS and Logic Pro preferred
• A valid driver’s license

• Environment: Work is performed mostly in an indoor/office environment. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students. The noise level is moderate to high, depending on the class being taught.
• Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, using repetitive motions; may occasionally lift up 20 lbs. or up to 10 pounds constantly; to travel in all modes of transportation; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to grasp, finger, and feel and to hold a conductor’s baton. Must be able to conduct a musical and/or band class and musical production.
• Vision: Required to have visual acuity, with or without correction, to be able to see close activities such as viewing a computer terminal and music sheet, distance and focus to operate motor vehicles.
• Auditory: Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Must be able to talk and hear by telephone and in person.
