The Faculty Educator works closely with the Assistant Deans for the Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum to support the vertical and longitudinal integration of clinical content throughout the pre-clinical phases of the medical program. The position provides oversight of assessment item development and analysis, contributes to the student feedback process, and assists in developing appropriate responses to identified concerns. In addition, the Faculty Educator serves as the Career Exploration Clerkship Director for the third-year medical curriculum.
In this capacity, the role is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the Career Exploration clerkship, an essential program that offers structured opportunities for medical students to explore specialties, clarify career interests, and prepare for residency pathways. The position ensures that the clerkship aligns with LCME accreditation requirements by supporting students' professional development.
Essential Functions
- Design, implement, and regularly update clerkship goals, objectives, and educational materials in accordance with national standards and DUCOM Graduation Competencies.
- Develop an evaluation plan for all students that includes in-house assessments, NBME subject exams, clinical skills assessments, and professionalism evaluations, utilizing DUCOM-standard evaluation forms with ECC approval.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive clerkship assessment plan, revising processes as needed to support continuous improvement.
- Review and evaluate all clerkship sites for the quality of the learning environment, adequacy of educational resources, and comparability of student experience across locations.
- Coordinate student assignments, learning activities, and logistics across all educational sites.
- Collaborate with Residency Training Directors to define the role of house staff in student teaching and evaluation.
- Ensure timely distribution of clerkship objectives and instructional materials to faculty, residents, staff, and students.
- Monitor student feedback, identify performance concerns or professionalism issues, and develop appropriate remediation plans. Provide final evaluations of student performance to the Clerkship and Registrar's Office within required timelines.
- Present the annual clerkship report to the ECC Phase 2/3 Subcommittee and departmental faculty.
- Participate in clerkship orientations, site visits, Clerkship Directors meetings, and student promotions committee meetings. Maintain regular communication with site directors, provide feedback on course delivery and faculty performance, and uphold student confidentiality.
- Monitor faculty appointments, oversee access to clerkship resources, and serve as the primary point of contact for student concerns.
- Provide tutoring, academic support, remediation, and letters of recommendation for students as requested. Pre-Clinical Curriculum Development and Instruction
- Collaborate with co-course directors and thread leaders to schedule courses and maintain accurate academic calendars.
- Develop, revise, and integrate discipline-specific and multidisciplinary content across the curriculum to ensure alignment with program outcomes.
- Recruit and engage faculty content experts—including Tower affiliates and alumni—to review and update Independent Learning (IL) modules. Develop new ILs, update live sessions, and contribute to all Pathophysiology and Pathology sessions in Year 2.
- Prepare and deliver multidisciplinary review sessions before and after examinations.
- Create examinations, checkpoint assessments, and other required evaluations.
- Communicate course information and expectations to students on a regular basis.
- Meet individually with students to provide academic guidance, discuss study strategies, and clarify content areas.
- Grade written assignments for HDS and other assigned courses.
