Special Education Teacher

Reports to:

Chief Executive Officer /Local Administration/ MaST Schools Network

Qualifications:

  • B.A/B.S. Degree in Education
  • Appropriate State of Pennsylvania Department of Education Teaching Certificate in the appropriate content area.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of instructional effects.
  • Strong understanding of special education law and code, ability to write comprehensive Individual Educational Plans, and assist with implementing intervention strategies, accommodations, and curriculum modifications.
  • Able to prepare and implement behavior management plans and communicate to general education teachers how to implement IEPs.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Common Core and Pennsylvania Standards, learning styles, curricula, and data analysis across K-12.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Knowledge of GSuite Applications:
    Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, etc.
  • Demonstrate an ability to facilitate communication among coworkers, students, and parents.
  • Must be able to evaluate problems, prioritize work and determine solutions.
  • Must possess and maintain valid Pennsylvania school clearances.

Job Overview:
Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Work in a self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. Supervises classroom instructional assistants or para-educators (if applicable).

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods and instructional models.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Assign and grade class work, and maintain timely and accurate assignments posted on class websites and homework.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.
  • Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems; development of curriculum and protocols; and school-wide procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, school policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of remedial programs for students requiring extra help.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula.
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress.
  • Incorporate technology and STREAM concepts into daily lessons.
  • Prepare for assigned classes, and show written evidence of preparation, including lesson plans, upon request of immediate supervisors.
  • Instruct and monitor students in using and caring for equipment and materials to prevent injuries and damage.
  • Organize and lead activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development as appropriate.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
  • Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need to implement specific instructional programs.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, school policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal law through implementation and adherence to the IEP process and assist disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms
