Description

The Electro-mechanical Engineer shall join the Gibbs & Cox Survivability Team to directly support an Environment Qualification Test (EQT) Facility located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Philadelphia, PA. The applicant must work well in a team environment and be willing to learn new skill sets for testing the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) characteristics of Navy equipment. A background in Electrical and / or Mechanical Engineering is preferred.

Experience with performing qualification testing is not required, as the applicant will be trained in all laboratory duties. The engineer will work directly with the test facility manager to support a backlog of EMI testing that includes managing projects, writing test procedures, configuring test setups inside Anechoic chambers, conducting MIL-STD- 461 emission and susceptibility tests and documenting results. The engineer will learn techniques for assessing, designing, or otherwise offering considerations for mitigating electromagnetic interference for mission critical equipment.

The engineer may also learn Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3), which is critical in the Navy ship design process. The test facility will also provide guidance for mechanical test fixture design to support shock and vibration test capabilities. Although the position is dedicated to the NSWCPD contract, the candidate may also support the Survivability Department at Leidos Gibbs & Cox for future ship inspections, technical reviews and EQT related tasking.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Receive MIL-STD-461 training to perform all aspects of EMI testing at NSWCPD's test lab.

  • Install power supplies, transformers and cables required to operate equipment under test.

  • Create and review test procedures to support qualification testing.

  • Interact with the Navy Technical Warrant Holder for approvals.

  • Install equipment and input/output cabling inside anechoic chambers to simulate shipboard operation.

  • Develop EMI measurement techniques and data acquisition hardware / software experience.

  • Perform MIL-STD-461 EMI and MIL-STD-1399 Power Quality Testing and document results.

  • Identify deficiencies and develop recommendations for solutions.

  • Learn grounding / shielding techniques and L-R-C filter design to aid in successful EMI testing.

  • Develop, document and brief interdisciplinary teams and Navy Stakeholders on EMI topics.

  • Create CDRLs associated with EMI Testing, Qualification and Waivers.

  • Develop knowledge in the areas of electromagnetic interference, electromagnetic control, electromagnetic pulse and electromagnetic vulnerability.

  • Support offsite EQT events at land-based test centers (system level), commercial test facilities (component level) or aboard Navy ships (sea trials).

  • Perform shipboard inspections to validate designs and proper installation of equipment.

  • Support other testing at the facility, including Shock and Vibration.
