Draftsperson II (6523) Structural
Under the general supervision of the Program Manager, Bridges and Buildings and/or an assigned engineer/architect the Draftsperson II shall be responsible for the following: prepares drawings, technical design details, elevations, sections, schedules, and layouts. Prepares basic calculations, develops materials lists, and verifies field conditions including dimensions. Prepares basic cost estimates; coordinates work with other drafters, engineers & architects. The draftsperson shall be fluent in the use of the latest version of Autodesk Revit, and/or similar BIM software and competent in the use of various office programs such as Microsoft Office to prepare spreadsheets, database input, develop basic memos, letters, and transmittals.
Performs basic technical data gathering from the field, vendors, internet and technical manuals, along with additional assignments as directed.
Specific responsibilities include preparing technical drawings for new installations or modifications to existing installations in accordance with instructions from the Program Manager or assigned staff engineering and/or architectural personnel. Prepares design detailing of technical assemblies under the general supervision of the Program Manager and/or assigned staff engineering/architectural personnel. Assists with the preparation of the design layout of entire technical systems under direct supervision of the Program Manager or assigned engineering/architectural personnel.
Verifies existing field conditions and dimensions in preparation of the design. Prepares basic calculations, cost estimates, and material lists in preparation of the design. Reviews drawings to assure compliance to codes and recognized standards. Assists in preparation of basic technical specifications in preparation of the design. Coordinates work with other drafters and engineer/architects that are part of the "project team".
Maintains an acceptable level of legibility and accuracy in compliance with departmental practices, standards and schedules. Works in all disciplines at a basic level of discipline specific knowledge and understanding. Estimates and communicates clearly the time required to prepare sketches, drawings, diagrams, schedules, and notes along with compiling a set of construction drawings. Archives and digitizes existing documents/drawings. Performs other duties as assigned.
Draftspersons, under the direct supervision of a specific discipline, shall be capable of working in all three engineering disciplines; architecture, structural, and mechanical. Each draftsperson shall also be capable of working independently in their discipline's area of expertise; architectural, structural and mechanical engineering. Each draftsperson is expected to be competent in their discipline's code specific knowledge and also have the ability to prepare basic calculations in an independent fashion.
Structural Disciplines:
Prepares technical drawings for new and/or renovations to facilities in accordance with instruction from the Program Manager and/or an assigned structural engineer. The drawings shall consist of but not necessarily limited to footings, foundations, steel framing, structural plans, elevation, sections and details for buildings, stations, bridges, platforms, retaining walls, tunnels, culverts, catenaries, and trolley poles. The draftsperson shall be capable of preparing basic footing and foundation designs along with fabrication details for bolted, riveted and welded connections.
The draftsperson shall be capable of developing reinforcing bar schedules and other building component schedules such as foundation, column, lintel, plating, and precast panel schedules. The draftsperson shall be familiar with structural detailing of steel, concrete, masonry, stone masonry, aluminum, and wood structures, for both modern and historic structures.
Qualifications and experience include a graduate of an accredited drafting or technical school with certification in Drafting or AutoCAD is required. Three (3) years of pertinent structural drafting experience required. Must be familiar with industrial standards, City, State, and Federal codes, and industry codes and standards is preferred. Must maintain familiarity with changes in aforementioned codes and standards. Must attain annual Track and safety certifications.
Must become familiar with departmental policies, procedures and design standards. Must pass Structural Draftsperson test. Equipment used includes AUTOCAD/Revit drafting equipment (80%) Calculator, Personal Computer, Site Inspection Equipment, and Manual Drafting Equipment (20%)
